Vauxhall small cars Discover the Vauxhall hatchback range and compare new, used and leasing deals
Vauxhall’s small cars have become familiar sights on the UK’s roads, starting with the original Viva in the 1960s, before capturing the hearts of so many young drivers with the cheap-and-tough Nova, Astra, and Corsa in the 1980s and 1990s. Now, Vauxhall makes the new Corsa, and the new Astra, both available with all-electric power.

Vauxhall small car range: current models
Vauxhall’s small car range currently includes the Corsa and the Astra, both available with a choice of petrol, hybrid, or fully-electric power.
Vauxhall Corsa
The compact Corsa is a mainstay of UK roads, and it’s still a popular starter car or car for learners, thanks to being easy-going to drive. The new hybrid version offers a little more punch with better fuel economy, and the ease of automatic driving in town. The cabin’s a bit too plain, though, and the Corsa’s not as affordable as once it was.
Vauxhall Corsa Electric
Electric power really suits the Corsa, giving it better refinement and making it even easier to drive. The bigger 51kWh battery option gives it up to 250 miles of range, but battery power means the Corsa is even more expensive, and it’s a tough price to justify.
Vauxhall Astra
The Astra has always been a popular family car, but nowadays it’s losing sales to SUVs and crossovers. The current Astra looks smart, if a bit too plain, on the outside and the same goes for the cabin which feels too cheap in places. It’s also small in the back seats. The good news is that the basic 1.2-litre engine is peachy to drive, and the new hybrid model is very economical.
Vauxhall Astra Electric
The electric Astra has a decent range — up to 250 miles, and 200 miles is pretty easy to extract from the 51kWh battery — and feels suitably smooth and refined to drive. It is quite expensive, though.
Vauxhall Astra GSe
The Astra GSe resurrects a classic Vauxhall sporty badge from the 1980s, and sticks it onto a high-powered plug-in hybrid Astra with 225hp, and a potential 30 mile electric range on a full charge. The Astra GSe is quick, but sadly the hybrid system makes it too heavy to be any fun.
