Car changing is a big deal
It offers a fantastic blend of style and practicality, but the high starting price could put you off. You can get around this though by browsing the used market.
I loved the Volkswagen ID Buzz when I first reviewed it back in 2023. It just has so much character thanks to the quirky styling and the light interior, and it’s not a case of style over substance either because it’s hugely practical.
The only slight fly in the ointment is the price, because it starts from nearly £60,000. At the time of writing you can save an average of £5,000 on a new ID Buzz through Carwow, however there is one way you can save even more.
I had a quick look at Carwow’s used ID Buzz models, and I quickly found a couple of low-mileage 2024 1st Edition Pro versions for £45,000. That’s a saving of nearly £20,000 compared to what it cost new, and it’s even finished in the wicked-looking two-tone white and green paint scheme.
It’s not just the styling which sets the ID Buzz apart from other electric cars – you also get an insane amount of interior space. The 1,121-litre boot is way ahead of anything else in this price range, and you get acres of rear head and legroom as well.
Out on this road the ID Buzz is really easy to drive despite its massive size. You get a great view forward thanks to the van-like driving position, and it’s really comfortable on long journeys.
However, not everything is perfect with this big VW. We actually lived with an ID Buzz for a few months and found that the real-world range isn’t great at around 230 miles, and some of the touch-sensitive controls are a faff to use as well.
Small gripes aside though, the Volkswagen ID Buzz is still one of my favourite family electric cars. It stands out from the crowd without compromising on practicality, and it’s much better value when you buy used.
