Volvo EX90 Review & Prices

The Volvo EX90 is a bit like the automotive equivalent of Fort Knox, because it's just about the safest place you can be at any one time.

And while it might look like a posh seven-seat electric SUV from the outside, Volvo reckons it’s a bit more than that. This is the beginning of a new era for the firm’s cars, apparently. It demonstrates the pinnacle of current safety and sustainability technology and shows where the company wants to go. That’s big, confident talk right there – and has earned it a highly commended spot in the Most Anticipated New Car category at the 2024 Carwow Car of the Year Awards.

It has to live up to the billing, too, as it will be competing with excellent electric cars such as the Mercedes EQS SUV, BMW iX and Audi Q8 e-tron.

Looking from the outside, it's typically Volvo, with its bold, boxy, upright silhouette similar to the Volvo XC90 big SUV. Up front you will find the familiar Thor’s Hammer headlight design flanking the grille-less front end. At the back there are large C-shaped tail lights, with more lighting beside the rear window. It’s very sleek, simple and ultra modern.

Inside, the minimalist design continues, with a 14.5-inch portrait-orientated touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and little in the way of physical buttons. There’s a bunch of built-in Google goodies, while your phone will also act as a key to unlock and start the car.

Music fans will be tempted by the high-tech sound system, which comes from Bowers & Wilkins. A whopping 25 speakers provide a '3D surround sound' experience, which is said to play music to the same quality that artists experience in the studio.

As cool as that undoubtedly is, what's really important for a large SUV is practicality, and the EX90 should deliver here too. With all seven seats in place you get 310 litres of boot space, but fold away the third row and you get a cavernous 650 litres. For comparison, the BMW iX is considerably down on the Volvo at 500 litres, while the Audi Q8 e-tron has 569 litres.

At launch the EX90 will be available with a 111kWh battery and a range of up to 364 miles, which is a bit less than the 365 miles in the EQS SUV and 380 miles in the BMW iX, but just over the Q8 e-tron’s 330 miles.

There are two power outputs available, with the 408hp version being the one with this maximum range. A more powerful 517hp version is also offered, with a range of 360 miles. Charging from 10 to 80% takes from 30 minutes in both cases.

The EX90 will be a technological tour de force. Cameras, radars and lidar combine to create a 360-degree view of the world around the car and help avoid obstacles ahead, while inside, the car monitors you to check if you’re getting distracted or drowsy. If you fall asleep or are taken ill while driving, the car will stop safely and call for help. There are even LEDs that mimic sunlight to provide a more natural ambiance in the car and are said to reduce the eye strain and headaches that can come from blue light exposure from screens.

At launch the Volvo EX90 is offered with one high-specification trim called Ultra. This includes 22-inch alloy wheels, four-zone climate system, active air suspension, adaptive cruise control, head-up display, panoramic roof, and an extensive suite of safety systems.
