New BMW iX revealed: mid-life update brings more power and 426 miles of range

Car changing is a big deal
This is the updated BMW iX. While not a lot seems to have changed on the outside, there have been significant improvements under the skin.
- New BMW iX revealed
- Updated EV gets upgraded batteries and motors
- New M70 version has 659hp
- 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds
- Up to 426 miles of range
- On sale now from £74,400
The BMW iX has been updated for 2025, and some models will now do more than 426 miles on a charge. There is also a new iX M70 with 659hp, 40hp more than the old M60 model.
First deliveries will start in the UK in May, with prices starting from £74,400, an increase of over £3,500 compared to the outgoing car.
New BMW iX motors and performance
Every version of the new BMW iX is now more powerful than before, although they all still use a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup.
The entry-level car now gets 408hp, up from 326hp in the old car. Mid-spec models go from 523hp to 544hp, but it’s the flagship M model which impresses most.
The old M60 has now been replaced by an M70 version, and it puts out 659hp and 1,015Nm of torque, an increase of 40hp over its predecessor. As a result, 0-60mph is dealt with in a blistering 3.8 seconds. That’s only 0.3 of a second slower than a BMW M3 Competition, however it’s also exactly the same as the old M60. Still, not bad for a two-tonne electric SUV.
New BMW iX batteries and range
The new BMW iX isn’t just faster than it was before, it’ll also go further on a charge thanks to a selection of larger battery packs.
The old entry-level car had a 74kWh battery, whereas you now get a 95kWh pack as standard. As a result the range has gone up by over 100 miles to 374 miles. It also trumps the 280 miles you get from the entry-level Audi Q8 e-tron.
The mid-spec model has a 109kWh battery which is only marginally bigger than the old one, but BMW has still managed to squeeze an extra 44 miles of range out of it, meaning it’ll do 426 miles on a charge. For comparison, the most you’ll get out of an Audi Q8 e-tron is 327 miles with the biggest battery, although a Polestar 3 can manage 438 miles.
Finally there’s the M70, which gets 366 miles from a 108kWh battery. Not bad for something offering this level of performance.
New BMW iX design
While the mechanical changes are pretty significant, the BMW iX’s styling remains more or less unchanged – meaning it’s just as polarising as before.
The headlights have been tweaked slightly with a new LED signature, and that massive beaver-tooth fake grille has some new graphics on it as well. This update also introduces the illuminated grille surround you’ll find on the i5 and i7.
You can also choose from a handful of new colours, including some with a matte finish, and there are a couple of new alloy wheel designs as well.
New BMW iX prices
The new BMW iX is available to order now, with first deliveries starting in May this year.
Prices start from £74,400 for the basic car with the smallest battery, an increase of just over £3,500 over the outgoing car. If you’re after the mid-range car with the longest range you’ll have to cough up £92,200, while the performance flagship M70 costs £113,300.
New BMW iX alternatives
For similar money to the new BMW iX you could consider a Volvo EX90. It’s a properly stylish electric SUV with seven seats and all the latest safety tech, but it’s not as comfortable as a Volvo should be and the infotainment system can be frustrating to use.
The Audi Q8 e-tron may also be on your shopping list, and it’s a fine choice with decent practicality and fast charging speeds. It’s just a shame that the range isn’t brilliant and it’s not as fun to drive as the BMW.
Finally, why not consider something a bit left-field like the Genesis GV70 electrified? It’s around £10,000 cheaper than the iX but is a lot more stylish, and it’s really comfortable to drive as well. The range isn’t brilliant though.
