Colour guide
Metallic - Black sapphire
Free
You can’t go wrong with metallic Black on a large German SUV. This hue contrasts nicely with the silver exterior detailing on the X Line trim. It also works well with the darker window surrounds on the M Sport trim. For maximum stealth points, spec the Jet Black alloy wheels, too.
Metallic - Brooklyn grey
Free
This grey isn’t too light to drown out the silvery trims pieces on the xLine, but not so dark to disrupt the black trim pieces on the M Sport or M models. It’s not the most exciting option though.

Metallic - Carbon black
Free
Carbon black is more of a very dark blue with a subtle metallic sparkle. It can look almost black in certain lights and won’t need constant washing to look its best. Available solely on the M Sport trim, it’s a truly stunning hue that works especially when combined with a light-coloured leather interior.
Metallic - Manhattan
Free
Another colour named after a part of New York, Manhattan is more brown and is only offered with M-derived models. It’ll hide a lot of muck and grime you’ll pick up over winter, and is a nice alternative to other monotone options.
Metallic - Marina Bay blue
Free
Only available with the M-lite M60i, Marina Blue compliments the black trim pieces of the sportier model well. It’s not too loud that it’s off-putting, yet not too understated if you want to have some presence on the road. It’s a great choice.
Metallic - Mineral white
Free
This bright and crisp hue looks great against the X5’s black exterior trim pieces. It should mask minor scratches well, although you’ll need to have a bucket and sponge handy after every downpour to keep it looking at its best. You may also want to look at some of the more interesting metallics on offer before deciding on this one, or simply go for the no-cost solid Alpine white option.
Metallic - Skyscraper grey
Free
Not too dissimilar from Brooklyn Grey, Skyscraper Grey is a slightly darker tone that doesn’t do a disservice to the trim pieces you’ll find around the X5. Certainly better looking with the M’d versions, it’s still not that exciting.
Solid - Alpine white
Free
This is the only solid paint finish on offer as well as the only no-cost option for both trim levels. Alpine white may lack a metallic sparkle, but it suits the X5 well and should be popular with used car buyers. You also save a few hundred pounds that could go towards a plusher leather interior trim.
Metallic - Blue ridge mountain
£795
Rather than being a more traditional blue, Blue ridge mountain has a greeny undertone to it that looks quite tropical. However, it doesn't work that well on the X5 and won't be particularly popular on the used market.
BMW Individual metallic paint - Dravit grey
£1,095
More of a mix of grey and brown, Dravit Grey is offered on all versions of the X5. It’s arguably the least inspiring colour for the SUV as it doesn’t highlight the car’s details well, nor look good next to the trim pieces.
BMW Individual metallic paint - Tanzanite blue
£1,095
Darker than Marina Bay blue, Tanzanite Blue is a mainstay of BMW’s Individual offerings. It’s understated and looks professional, offering more sheen than other options. It looks the best on the entry xLine model.
Additional BMW Individual metallic paint - Frozen pure grey
£2,400
The only matte option of the X5’s offering, Frozen Pure Grey will be tricky to maintain and keep looking its best. That being said, alongside the darker trim pieces of the M models, it looks quite mean and is the best of the four grey paints.
BMW Individual paint special - Custom
£5,175
If nothing takes your fancy from BMW’s range of regular paints, then you can always take a look at its selection of Individual custom colours. Going down this route will be the way to have a distinctive colour or eye-catching finish. Of course, these fancy colours will be way more expensive to spec than a regular metallic paint…
