Mat Watson: I was wrong about the BMW M5

February 28, 2025 by

It’s fair to say that the BMW M5 has received a lot of criticism since its launch for being a bit too big – and far too heavy. I had the same opinion after I got behind the wheel, with the fun being spoiled by just how cumbersome the two-and-a-half tonne M5 feels on the road.

The weight is offset by its ludicrous power, with 727hp and 1000Nm of torque when its engine and hybrid system are both working together. That’s good for a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds – but on a normal road there’s just no way to make the most of it.

That being said, it didn’t feel right to come to a conclusion without comparing the M5 to some of its closest alternatives – so that’s what I’ve done here. Does the M5 leave a different impression on a closed course with an Audi RS7 and a Mercedes-AMG GT?

The RS7 and AMG GT are the perfect cars to compare the M5 to, with all three having twin-turbocharged V8 engines, four-wheel drive, luxurious interiors and masses of power. They all have distinct characteristics though, with their own take on the super-saloon recipe.

Fast Audis typically shine in a straight line, and with 630hp and 850Nm of torque the RS7 is no different. It may be down on power compared to the M5, but because it’s lighter it can hit 60mph in 3.4 seconds.

The Mercedes-AMG GT is a bit more powerful than the RS7, with 639hp and 900Nm of torque from its 4.0-litre engine – and according to Mercedes it’ll hit 60mph in 3.0 seconds.

But even with similar power-to-weight figures, the biggest question is whether or not the BMW M5 is as fun to drive as its lighter, smaller alternatives? Will having a wet circuit make a difference, or is the M5 just a bit too big for its own good? Have a watch and find out!
