Is the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe a good car?
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe is a high-performance version of the GLE Coupe, itself a slopey-roofed version of the GLE SUV. Confused yet? All you really need to know is that it’s a bit like semi-skimmed milk. You see, the regular model is the 0% version, while the big, bad AMG 63 S is full-fat milk. The AMG 53 sits in the middle, offering some of the creamy goodness of its bigger brother while keeping some of the comfort and practicality of the regular car.
So what exactly elevates it from the regular car beneath it? For a start, you get a slightly more aggressive body kit and big 22-inch alloy wheels so passers by know this is A Fast Car, and a suitably fruity exhaust system that makes it aurally as well as aesthetically pleasing.
Then there’s the engine that gives the exhaust its tuneful parp. It’s a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol unit that makes a healthy 435hp thanks to a little electrical boost. It’s not a ‘proper’ hybrid, though, so don’t expect to be cruising around town on fuel-saving electric power alone. Fuel economy is also not helped a huge amount by the motor, recording 26mpg, but it compensates for this by doing the 0-60mph in a sprightly 5.0 seconds flat.
Inside, the difference between AMG and non-AMG models isn’t quite so obvious, but you do get two huge displays for your infotainment and driver info, plenty of brushed metal bits and squishy plastics. The sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel and more cosseting seats are AMG-exclusive, with the latter available in black, beige or red.
The AMG GLE 53 Coupe provides a great compromise between performance, practicality and style
Speaking of equipment, the Coupe only comes in the high-specification Night Edition Premium Plus trim (you can get the AMG 53 SUV in a lesser Premium spec). Standard kit includes adaptive suspension so you can choose between sporty- and comfort-focused settings, a panoramic sliding sunroof for a light and airy interior, and a Night Pack that essentially replaces chrome bits with black bits.
So it’s fast and stylish, but this is still an SUV so it has to be practical. In the past we’ve praised the GLE for having a spacious cabin all-round, but this being the coupe means that those over six-foot will likely find headroom a bit tight in the back, something that’s unlikely to change in the new model.
Boot space is impressive at 655 litres, and because of the shape, is actually more than you get in the SUV version. Regardless, we’ve found that the sloping roofline means the reality is that it’s less practical for taller items or when you’re really packing the boot full of bags, suitcases and other items for the family holiday.
Sounds like a great all-rounder, but we’ll let you know what we really think when we get behind the wheel soon.
