Solid - Polar white Free

Would you like your new Mercedes C-Class to look like you’ve picked it up at the airport and have to drop it back with a full tank of fuel? No? Then avoid Polar white, which is pure rental car special.

Metallic - Graphite grey £715

Graphite grey looks terrific if you catch it on a sunny day, when you can pick up the blue and green undertones in the colour. On your average British day, though, it just looks too dull.

Metallic - High tech silver £715

High tech silver would be a nice colour for the C-Class — it’s a traditional bright, shiny silver which always works well on a Mercedes — but up against Mojave silver it lacks a bit of warmth and depth, and as they’re the same price…

Metallic - Obsidian black £715

You can’t help but think of Spinal Tap’s ‘none more black’ when you see Obsidian black — it’s a very, very dark shade with little life in the metal flake. It looks smart enough on the C-Class, but it’s a somewhat lifeless colour.

Metallic - Selenite Grey £715

Selenite has an almost-matte finish to it, an effect that’s doubled on a cloudy day, but it doesn’t have the maintenance and care issues of some properly matte finishes. Like Spectral blue, it really needs an AMG bodykit and wheels to work best, but it’s a good choice.

Metallic - Sodalite blue £715

Socialite blue is a really nice colour, as on bright days it’s a very sparkling blue, but duller skies reveal a faint touch of mauve or purple in the mixture. Looks especially smart on the C-Class estate.

Metallic - Spectral blue £715

Spectral blue is Mercedes’ answer to BMW’s bright and sporty Portimao blue and it works best if you’ve bought a sporty-looking AMG or AMG-Line version of the C-Class. It’s a handsome shade, but it needs careful accessorising if it’s to work at its best.

Manufaktur metallic - Opalite white bright £925

Considering how expensive an option it is, Opalite white is a bit of a disappointment. Unlike Mercedes’ Diamond white option, Opalite is quite a hard white, with little warmth to it, which makes it look too plain (and frankly too cheap) under British skies.

Manufaktur metallic - Patagonia red £925

You can’t really go wrong with Patagonia red as it’s basically weather-proof. On dull days, there’s a hint of darker burgundy and maroon in it that adds a touch of class to the C, while on sunny days it pops with Ferrari-red overtones. A great, if expensive, choice.

Manufaktur solid - Alpine grey £925
