Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe a good car?
This is the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe, a more swoopy-looking version of the mega-fast SUV. How much it appeals depends largely on how much you prioritise style over outright practicality – but coupe-esque SUVs are a popular choice, with alternatives including the BMW X6 M and Audi RS Q8.
At the rear is where you’ll find the only major difference between this Coupe version and the regular AMG GLC 63 S. Gone is the tall and blocky SUV rear end and in comes a sloping, tapering roofline that ends in a small kick-up spoiler. It’s a bit like creating a designer rain mac – it’s only slightly less practical, but looks a bit more stylish.
Yes, there is a practicality penalty for your designer SUV, but it’s only a slight one. The standard GLC 63 S has a relatively small 470-litre boot with the back seats up, which is exactly the same as the Coupe. However, the sloping roof means you get a bit less capacity with the seats down, and the reduced headroom in the boot impacts your ability to carry taller items if you have rear seat passengers and can’t fold their seats.
The rest of the AMG GLC 63 S Coupe is the same, though. You get a plug-in hybrid engine, which doesn’t deliver much in the way of all-electric mileage (just 7.5 miles on a full charge of the battery) but which over-delivers on power. You end up with a silly 680hp when both the engine and electric motor are pulling together.
It’s more of a tech-fest on wheels than a muscle car in an SUV suit
You get all-wheel drive as a result of this combination, but that electric motor drives the rear wheels directly and can swap power between each side, depending on which wheel has the most grip for better acceleration.
Up front, there’s the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as you’ll find in the mighty AMG A45 hot hatch, and while it’s incredibly powerful for such a compact engine, it is one of the limiting factors of the AMG GLC 63 S. That’s because it simply cannot make the thunderous noise of the old AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine, so there’s less of an emotional connection to this model. It’s more of a tech-fest on wheels than a muscle car in an SUV suit.
What it’s not is slow. The AMG GLC 63 S Coupe will hit 62mph from rest in just 3.5 seconds, and there are no fewer than eight selectable driving modes to allow you to make the most of all that performance potential.
The cabin is sumptuous, and that big touchscreen for the infotainment system is one of the easiest and best to use in the business. The sloping roof does trim headroom in the back seats just a little, but not enough that anyone will be seriously complaining.
