  • 40kWh battery and up to 248 miles of range
  • Possibly on sale in 2030

The Citroen Oli (pronounced ‘all-e’) was revealed in Paris last year, and it’s a look ahead to what future electric cars from Citroen will look like.

It’s been designed using radical new materials to keep the weight down, which in turn boosts range, and it’s built with sustainability and affordability in mind.

New Citroen Oli concept design

You’re unlikely to mistake the Citroen Oli for any other car on sale today. The upright windscreen and angular shape help it stand out from the crowd.

That flat windscreen helps keep manufacturing costs low, and there are some clever vents in the bonnet to direct air around it and help the aerodynamics. There are also some funky-looking C-shaped LED lights and a rugged front bumper with orange tow hooks.

The side profile is where this Oli concept looks the most futuristic. The flat bonnet and flat roof once again keep the build cost down, and the jacked-up ride height and chunky black cladding make it look rugged.

The side also features rear-hinged back doors, as well as some massive alloy wheels. Around the rear of the car you have some more angular lights and an open bed a bit like a pickup truck. This will probably be covered for the production version.

New Citroen Oli Concept batteries and range

The Citroen Oli concept is fitted with a 40kWh battery, which is relatively small for a modern EV. Despite this, the claimed range is an ambitious 248 miles.

Citroen plans to achieve this by keeping the weight as low as possible. The Oli weighs just 1,000kg and is limited to 68mph. Watch the Citroen Ami review below for a look at another lightweight Citroen EV…

This weight-saving regime includes a new material for the roof and bonnet. It’s reinforced honeycomb cardboard coated in resin to make it waterproof. Not only is it much lighter than steel, it’s actually strong enough to stand on. This, combined with some clever vents to help it cut through the air more cleanly and the lighter battery should help to maximise range.

New Citroen Oli concept interior

The weight-saving theme continues on the interior, where you won’t find any unnecessary technology. There’s no infotainment system here, just a mount for your mobile phone and two docks for some bluetooth speakers.

The seats are also a clever mesh material and they use 80% less parts than a traditional seat. There are no carpets either, just a layer of foam. This not only reduces weight, it also helps make the car more affordable.

Can you buy the Citroen Oli concept?

The new Citroen Oli is just a concept for now, and you’re unlikely to see a production version until the end of the decade. That said, a stripped-back electric SUV such as this could start as low as £20,000, but it remains to be seen how close to the concept a production version could be.
