US car maker Cadillac is bolstering its upcoming range of UK models with two electric SUVs called Optiq and Lyriq.

  • All-electric Optiq SUV to join larger Lyriq SUV later this year
  • Dual electric motors and 85kWh battery pack standard on all trims
  • Power output of 292hp and 480Nm
  • 300 miles of range under US rating system
  • Futuristic interior design with 33.0-inch OLED display screen

Cadillac has historically struggled to gain a significant foothold in the UK car market. It currently offers only the aging XT4 SUV but plans to introduce two new electric SUVs before the end of 2024.

The range-topping Lyriq will be an alternative to the BMW iX, while the smaller Optiq is set to take on the Audi Q4 e-tron and Lexus RZ.

These two models will form the basis of Cadillac’s new electric reinvention in the UK and other European markets. The big uptake in EVs in recent years should help bolster interest when the new models arrive, with the smaller Optiq sure to account for the bulk of sales.

The Optiq features several recognisable design cues from the sleek Lyriq SUV, and all UK models will have a 292hp dual-motor setup, which means it will be all-wheel drive. An 85kWh battery pack will be standard, offering a range of 300 miles according to US figures, though Europe’s WLTP measuring system may yield slightly different results. No information on peak charging levels has been announced yet, but Cadillac states that a 10-minute fast charge should yield around 80 miles of range.

The interior of the Optiq is dominated by a curved 33.0-inch OLED display that looks every bit as impressive as the panoramic screens offered by BMW and Mercedes. Material quality is said to be of a high standard, with recycled woven textiles adorning some surfaces, but all will become apparent when the Optiq arrives in the autumn.

General Motors Europe boss Jaclyn McQuaid stated that a new vehicle platform allowed for more flexibility in producing cars for right-hand drive markets. It will simplify the introduction of other models in different segments in the future, so perhaps this time Cadillac is here to stay. Details about dealer networks and Cadillac’s vision for the UK market will be announced closer to the end of the year.

Pricing for the Optiq in the US is expected to start at around $54,000. UK figures have yet to be announced.
