This is the new Volkswagen Tayron – a seven-seater SUV which replaces the ageing Tiguan AllSpace.

  • Large seven-seat SUV
  • Similar styling to the new Tiguan
  • Much more interior space than that car…
  • …but the same range of engines
  • On sale in 2025

If you like the look of the new Volkswagen Tiguan, but need an extra pair of seats in the back, this is the answer to your prayers – the new Volkswagen Tayron.

If you’ve never heard the name Tayron, that’s because it used to be a model exclusive to the Chinese market. This new one on the other hand will be sold in Europe, and it replaces the old Tiguan AllSpace. Alternatives include the Nissan X-Trail, Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008.

New Volkswagen Tayron design

You may have been expecting the new Volkswagen Tayron to simply look like a stretched version of the Tiguan. While the two cars do look very similar, the new seven-seater does have a slightly different face and some unique design cues.

New Volkswagen Tayron front

The slim headlights and full-width light bar across the bonnet is a feature taken from the Tiguan, but the Tayron’s lamps don’t flick up into the front wings. This car is around 10mm wider than the Tiguan as well, giving it a slightly more imposing stance.

New Volkswagen Tayron side

It’s also 230mm longer to accommodate that extra row of seats in the back, however the overall shape is still Tiguan-esque. It has a more sporty-looking sloping roofline compared to a Hyundai Santa Fe, and alloy wheels start at 17 inches rising to 19s on higher-spec models.

New Volkswagen Tayron rear

Moving to the rear, this car has a full-width tail light assembly which is almost the same as the Tiguan’s. It does have a different LED light signature, but beyond this it’s difficult to tell the two cars apart from the back.

New Volkswagen Tiguan interior and infotainment

Just like the exterior, the interior of the new Volkswagen Tayron is subtly different to the Tiguan in a few key ways.

New Volkswagen Tayron interior

The two cars share a similar gloss-black panel across the dashboard with some intricate ambient lighting, however the Tayron has an additional trim strip underneath which curves up at the ends – and this can be finished in a classy-looking wood veneer.

New Volkswagen Tayron cabin

The centre console is also very close to the Tiguan’s in terms of design, with both cars sharing the multi-function knob which can be used to control your volume, driving modes and ambient lighting.

New Volkswagen Tayron centre dial

Sat atop the dashboard is the same 12.9-inch touchscreen as you’ll find in other VW models, although it can be upgraded to a 15.0-inch system. A 10.25-inch digital driver’s display is also standard across the range.

New Volkswagen Tayron rear seats

Of course, the main reason you’ll buy the Tayron over the Tiguan is for the added interior space. This is the second-largest SUV which Volkswagen sells in Europe, with the Touareg remaining the biggest on offer.

New Volkswagen Tayron boot

You can choose between a five-seat model or a seven-seater, with the former getting 885 litres of boot space – 25 litres less than a Skoda Kodiaq. Go for the extra set of chairs and this drops to 850 litres, making it over 200 litres bigger than the Hyundai Santa Fe’s load area.

New Volkswagen Tayron engines and driving

The new Tayron is offered with exactly the same engine lineup as the Tiguan, meaning you can choose between petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options.

New Volkswagen Tayron front driving

The latter pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine to an electric motor, and there are 204hp and 272hp flavours to choose from. These will be able to do over 62 miles on electric power alone, although the final number is yet to be confirmed. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the hybrid gubbins under the boot floor means you can’t have the PHEV models with seven seats. A Peugeot 5008 can be had with a plug-in hybrid engine and seven seats.

New Volkswagen Tayron rear quarter driving

So if carrying seven people is a non-negotiable, you’ll be choosing between the petrol and diesel variants. The range kicks off with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol with 150hp, or there’s a 2.0-litre petrol with either 204hp or 265hp. Both of these are all-wheel drive as standard.

New Volkswagen Tayron front quarter driving

As for the diesels, there are two 2.0-litre engines on offer. The 150hp model has front-wheel drive, while the more powerful 193hp version is all-wheel drive-only. Regardless of which engine you choose, an automatic gearbox is the only option.

When can I buy the new Volkswagen Tayron?

The new Volkswagen Tayron is expected to go on sale early next year, however prices haven’t been confirmed just yet. All the extra interior space will almost certainly come at an extra cost over the Tiguan though, so expect to see a figure of close to £45,000.
