BMW has revealed its latest infotainment system at the 2025 CES technology show in Las Vegas, and it’ll be available in all new BMWs from the end of the year.
It features a trio of new displays, including one nestled at the base of the windscreen which spans the entire width of the car. A new 3D head-up display will also be available as an option.
New BMW iDrive infotainment system: what’s new?
Pretty much everything really. This is an all-new infotainment setup which works differently to any BMW you can buy today. For starters, the rotary dial in the centre console is no more. It’s controlled using either the touchscreen, voice commands or the buttons on the curiously-shaped steering wheel.
The central touchscreen isn’t anything extraordinary, other than the fact it’s a weird slanted shape, it’s the “Panoramic Vision” display which takes centre stage here. There’s a black printed strip at the base of the windscreen, spanning the entire width of the car, and information is projected onto it with a 3D effect.
The display is split into three sections. The speed and driving information is above the steering wheel, and then there are two sections which can be customised to show things like your current driving mode, music and incoming phone calls.
This can be paired with an optional 3D head-up display which projects things like navigation directions onto the road ahead, reducing the need to look down at the central screen. The steering wheel buttons can change as well depending on what you’re currently doing. For example, if someone is calling you then a green button will appear on the wheel to answer.
Which BMWs will get this new technology?
This new iDrive system will feature on every new BMW model launched from the end of 2025, and it’s likely to debut on the new iX3 electric SUV, followed soon after by the next BMW 3 Series.
