10 great alternatives to the Volkswagen T-Roc
January 24, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
Car changing is a big deal
The T-Roc is one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models in the UK, and it’s a great small SUV for families. There are still plenty of great alternatives on offer though, here are 10 of the best…
If you’re after a spacious SUV with enough room for families, but still want something compact for darting around town, the Volkswagen T-Roc should be high up on your shopping list. It’s easy to drive, packed with tech and has a big boot.
The T-Roc isn’t perfect though, because it’s quite expensive and other SUVs are more comfortable over bumps. If you’re in the market for a car like this, here are 10 other models you may want to take a look at.
- Kia Sportage
- Ford Puma
- Hyundai Kona
- Seat Ateca
- Toyota C-HR
- Nissan Qashqai
- Skoda Karoq
- Mazda CX-30
- Peugeot 2008
- Renault Captur
1. Kia Sportage
The first alternative on our list is the Kia Sportage. A facelifted version will go on sale in 2025, but the current car is still a great choice. With a 591-litre boot, extensive standard equipment and a 7-year warranty, the Kia is a strong contender despite its Marmite front-end styling.
2. Ford Puma
The Ford Puma stands out particularly for its value for money. It’s a few thousand pounds cheaper than the T-Roc but offers impressive standard equipment, a bigger boot and it’s more fun to drive on a twisty road. The interior quality isn’t as good as the VW’s, but the Puma is still a stylish option which is cheap to run.
3. Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona is another strong contender among the T-Roc’s competitors. It’s cheaper than the VW and yet comes with plenty of kit. It’s available with a wide range of economical hybrid engines, and it’s quiet on the motorway as well. It’s just a shame that driver assistance systems can be irritating.
4. Seat Ateca
If you fancy something a bit more sporty-looking than the T-Roc, why not check out the SEAT Ateca? For around the same price as the VW you get a larger SUV with a big boot and loads of interior space, and it’s nice to drive as well. The cabin may not be as solid as the T-Roc’s, but it’s still got plenty of tech on board.
5. Toyota C-HR
The Toyota C-HR is certainly more striking than a T-Roc. Its futuristic design sets it apart from other SUVs, and the interior is really well-made. Additionally, it also has a range of efficient hybrid engines and you can get a 10-year warranty if you keep it serviced on time at approved dealers. It may not be the most practical car in this class, but the extensive list of standard equipment makes up for this.
6. Nissan Qashqai
Next on the list is the Nissan Qashqai, which underwent a facelift in 2024. This update brings tweaked styling and a tweaked interior, and it’s a properly comfortable SUV for wafting around in. It may not be all that exciting, but the Qashqai is more practical than a T-Roc and it’s slightly cheaper too.
7. Skoda Karoq
Skoda has a long-standing reputation for no-nonsense practicality, and the Karoq is about as easy to live with as SUVs get. The interior controls are simple to use, it’s practical and it’s comfortable to drive. You’ll want to avoid the entry-level petrol engine as it feels sluggish, but go for the 1.5-litre turbocharged unit and you’ll have a great all-rounder with decent fuel economy.
8. Mazda CX-30
The Mazda CX-30 stands out with its elegant design and high-quality cabin. It’s also great fun to drive on a twisty road, and you get loads of kit as standard. It may not be the most practical alternative to the T-Roc, but there’s plenty of space up front and the Mazda feels properly sporty from behind the wheel thanks to the low-slung driving position.
9. Peugeot 2008
The Peugeot 2008 offers excellent value for money, with efficient engines making it cheap to run. It’s also a properly stylish little SUV with an equally striking interior. However, drawbacks include a smaller boot and a unique driving position which may not suit all drivers.
10. Renault Captur
The recently-revised Renault Captur is a great small SUV with a massive boot and one of the best infotainment systems in the business. It has Google software built-in, making it just as easy to use as your phone. The hybrid engine is also really economical, and the interior quality is easily on par with the VW’s.
