That’s a massive 65% saving over new, and you get an awful lot of car for the money.

I remember the first time I drove the Tesla Model 3 thinking that it was even better than the Model S of the time for much less money. It’s always been a great-value electric car, offering a shed-load of tech for less than the German competition.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been around for six years now, because it still feels more modern than a lot of new EVs. And it’s now even better value if you buy one second-hand.

Used examples from 2019 are starting to slip below the £15,000 mark these days, making it almost £26,000 cheaper than it was when it was new. Now there are a few reasons that second-hand Tesla values are on the downturn, which you can read about in our deep-dive into what is going on at Tesla.

Tesla Model 3

For used buyers it just means that you can pick up a proper bargain. The Model 3’s interior still feels fresh six years later, although the stripped-back, button-free layout may take some getting used to.

Finding one with the excellent Autopilot adaptive cruise control shouldn’t prove too difficult, and it does a great job of taking the stress out of long-distance journeys. It’ll steer to keep you in lane, as well as maintain a safe distance from the car in front.

Charging on the go is no problem either, because you’ll have full access to the Supercharger network. It’s one of the best out there, you just pull up and plug in. Billing is done automatically through the car, and they’re really quick and reliable as well.

The Model 3 isn’t perfect though, because the interior quality isn’t quite up there with something like a BMW i4. It just feels a bit more flimsy, although that said we did live with one which had covered 170,000 as a taxi, and it held up quite well.

For £15,000 you’ll be looking at a 2019 Standard Range model with around 60,000 miles on the clock. It has a claimed range of 278 miles, and the ex-taxi we had was still getting very close to the original claimed figure.

Up your budget to £20,000 and you can get the Performance version, which offers a blistering turn of pace. It’ll do 0-60mph in just 5.3 seconds, and it should still be able to do more than 300 miles on a charge.
