Is a second hand Tesla Model 3 a good car?

Yes. In fact the Tesla Model 3 is better than good. It’s the car that brought Tesla’s electric know-how to a lower price point, and it’s still among the best EVs several years after launch.

If you are shopping for a used Model 3, you’ll have a good choice as the Model 3 is one of the best-selling electric cars in Britain. Early examples now cost less than a bargain-basement new hatchback.

Any Model 3 is quick. Even the entry-level rear-wheel-drive model reaches 60mph in just over six seconds. The Long Range AWD version trims that to 4.2 seconds, with a range of up to 390 miles.

Every version of the Model 3 handles well, but it’s the updated model released in 2023 which best balances comfort and driver appeal.

Inside, the Tesla takes minimalism to the extreme. Almost every control is handled by the touchscreen, and there’s no separate display to tell you how quickly you are going. Instead, the speed is shown in the corner of the touchscreen.

It’s not as easy to read at a glance as conventional dials and having to use the screen for simple tasks such as adjusting the mirrors is annoying. That said, the screen looks great and it’s surprisingly easy to use. There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but with a native system this good, you may not miss them.

Quality has improved over the hit-and-miss cabins or earlier Teslas, and there’s decent space front and rear, but the larger Model Y SUV is more family-friendly than the 3.

Perhaps the most compelling reason for choosing the Model 3 over alternative SUVs is nothing to do with the car itself. The Tesla Supercharger network is the envy of other EV drivers, with rapid charging at well-chosen locations. Some of the network has been opened up to owners of other brands, but if you want full access you’ll need to play for Team Tesla.

What to look for when buying a used Tesla Model 3

As a rule, electric cars are more reliable than vehicles with an internal combustion engine – there are fewer moving parts to go wrong. What’s more, after an iffy start with its early cars, Tesla’s reliability is improving. The Model 3 fares well in most studies.

Worries over the lifespan of the battery bother many used EV buyers. While an EV’s battery capacity will steadily degrade over time, there are plenty of Teslas which have covered six-figure mileages and are still going strong on the original battery.

Tesla’s battery warranty lasts for eight years and 100,000 miles if you choose the rear-wheel-drive car, and eight years and 120,000 miles for owners of the Long Range AWD model. If the battery drops below 70% within the warranty period it will be replaced.

There are some quality issues to be aware of, more so for early examples of the Model 3 than the latest cars. Look out for noisy sunroofs, scratched trim, and poor panel alignment.

Tesla Model 3 FAQs

The Tesla Model 3 can be charged using a home EV charger or by plugging into the public charging network. It’s compatible with both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) charging.

One advantage of owning a Tesla is having access to the full Tesla Supercharger network, which offers quick and powerful recharging at more than 140 locations across the UK, including motorway services. Most of these chargers aren’t available to drivers of other EVs.

Reckon on spending around £15,000-16,000 to replace the Tesla Model 3 battery. However, if you need a new battery you’ll have been very unlucky. We’ve heard of Tesla taxis covering well over 200,000 miles on the original battery pack.

There’s an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty of the battery of the rear-wheel-drive Model 3. That increases to 120,000 miles of cover for the Long Range and Performance models. Owners can claim if the battery drops below 70% of the original capacity within that time or mileage.

Yes. The Tesla 3 is the best value Tesla yet, whether you are buying new or used. It has a better reputation for reliability than some earlier Tesla models.

It varies depending on the exact model you choose. The latest version can go up to 390 miles on a charge according to the official tests. Realistically, over 300 miles should be achievable in summer months for the Model 3 Long Range. With the standard battery, over 250 miles shouldn’t be a problem.
