The standard Alfa Romeo Junior is a stylish electric SUV, but it’s a bit unremarkable to drive. The same can’t be said for the spicy Veloce model though, which feels like a hot hatch on a twisty road. Here are five cool things about the top-of-the-range EV.

Electric SUVs aren’t known for being all that fun to drive, but the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce feels like a bona-fide hot hatch when the road gets twisty. You’d never tell that it shares its underpinnings with the Vauxhall Mokka Electric, because it feels much faster and more agile than that car.

This is thanks to a 280hp electric motor driving the front wheels, as well as some clever chassis tweaks which we’ll get onto shortly. It’s pretty expensive, and the interior feels a bit cheap in places, but it’s still a charming electric SUV which is super stylish. Here are five cool things about the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce.

1. It has a proper limited-slip differential

Not many electric SUVs can claim to have a limited slip differential, because this is technology which is usually reserved for high-end performance cars. It helps to distribute the power across the two front wheels for maximum agility, and it certainly makes a difference in the Junior.

The standard car handles much like any other EV from Peugeot or Vauxhall, but the Veloce is nimble and it spins up the front wheels like a hot hatch when you plant your foot out of a corner. You can have some proper fun in this car.

2. Sabelt bucket seats

This is another feature which is unusual to find in an electric SUV. Sabelt makes high-end bucket seats for racing, but they’ve also made the optional sports seats in the Junior Veloce. They’ll cost you a hefty £2,000, or you can pay over £4,000 to have them fitted to the basic model.

This is overkill in the 156hp Junior, but in the more powerful Veloce they do come in handy while you fling the car around corners. They not only look fantastic, but they do a great job of holding you in place.

3. Brembo brakes

The Junior Veloce has plenty of stopping power if you get a bit carried away, because it has powerful Brembo brakes which give you real confidence.

You can also option red brake calipers to sit behind the 20-inch alloy wheels, and they look great. It really adds a sporty vibe.

4. Steering and chassis upgrades

You also get a different steering setup in the Veloce which is quicker and more responsive than the standard car’s. This, paired with suspension which is lowered by 25mm, help make this sensible electric SUV feel more exciting.

5. Developed by Alfa’s best

What do the Junior Veloce, the Guilia Quadrifoglio, the 4C and the 8C have in common? They were all developed by the same team at Alfa Romeo. That basically makes it a supercar, right?
