Senior reviews writer Mario Christou gets behind the wheel of the new Skoda Elroq electric SUV. Can it hold a candle to its pricier alternatives, or is it worth spending that bit extra?

The Skoda Elroq marks the brand’s first proper stab at a mid-size electric SUV, and it’s pretty much an Enyaq that’s been shrunk in the wash.

It’s aimed at cars such as the Kia EV3, Renault Scenic E-Tech and Peugeot E-3008, but if you’re after something that’ll get the neighbours gossiping, you might be disappointed. With its slim headlights, neat little grille and angular rear end the Elroq looks tidy enough, but it’s hardly a showstopper. Still, if you prefer understatement over flash, it could be right up your street.

Step inside and things look a lot more inviting. The dashboard swoops down gracefully beneath a large, crisp 13-inch touchscreen, and the cabin feels properly well thought out.

Skoda has thrown in all its usual ‘Simply Clever’ tricks – built-in umbrellas, hidden ice scraper, clever storage hooks – and the seats are properly comfy. You even get a funky denim-style fabric across the dash as standard, but higher-spec cars get a leatherette finish.

When it comes to space and practicality, the Elroq really impresses. There’s plenty of room for adults front and back, a generous 470-litre boot, and loads of thoughtful touches like a hanging net for the charging cable and shelves above the wheel arches. It’s a little tight for back-seat foot space compared to some alternatives, but the comfortable seating more than makes up for it.

You get a choice of three battery sizes. The entry-level ‘50’ offers 230 miles from a 52kWh battery, the ‘60’ version stretches that to 250 miles, and the range-topping ‘85’ claims 360 miles on a full charge. All versions are currently rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive ’85x’ model is expected down the line. Fast charging is pretty handy too – a 10 to 80% top-up takes under half an hour if you can find a suitably powerful charger.

Out on the road the Elroq majors in comfort. It glides over most bumps and potholes with ease, though sharper knocks do leave the Elroq feeling wobbly. Light steering makes it feel right at home around town, and it’s an absolute cinch to park thanks to great visibility and a tight turning circle.

Motorway cruising suits it even better – the ride smooths out and there’s barely any noise to spoil the experience. It’s not exactly a back-road barnstormer though; the Elroq is happier rolling along at a relaxed pace than tearing into corners.

The Elroq’s pricing is one of its biggest attractions. It undercuts most alternatives of a similar size, yet still comes packed with kit even at the entry-level. It may not have the wow factor some look for in a car, but if you’re looking for a quiet, comfortable and genuinely clever electric SUV, the Skoda Elroq deserves a spot on your shortlist.
