Find out more about the Toyota Proace Verso Electric

Is the Toyota Proace Verso Electric a good car?

The Toyota Proace Verso Electric is big. It’s based on the Toyota Proace van — the Verso bit is Toyota-speak for it having seats and windows — and has enough space and sufficient seats for up to nine people. And their luggage.

The Proace Verso gets a new look which includes a big grille at the front which gives it just a touch of the styling of the anti-cool Toyota Alphard MPV, which is only sold in Asia. It’s also only now available as an electric model, as Toyota has dropped the diesel-engined versions of the Proace Verso

Thankfully, that means that the Proace Verso also gets a new, bigger, battery. The old model had a relatively small 50kWh battery which gave it a barely-useful range of just 143 miles. This new Proace Verso Electric comes with a 75kWh battery which gives it a much more useful range of 214 miles — although that’s going to shrink if you load it up fully with people and cargo.

The only electric motor option is a 136hp unit which drives the front wheels, and the battery can be recharged at up to 100kW from a fast DC charging point, allowing you to do a 10-80% top up in 45 minutes.

You can choose from two different body lengths for the Toyota Proace Verso — an L1 model which is 4,983mm long, and a stretched L2 version which is 5,333mm long. In the L1 model, which comes in Icon and Design specification, you can fit up to eight people (two in the front, and then two rows of three individual seats) while in the L2 you can squeeze in nine people (three in the front and then three in the two back rows). There’s also a luxurious Excel version which has seats for seven, including comfy individual captain’s chairs in the middle row and a folding table.

The Proace Verso Electric offers space for nine and a decent amount of electric range - but a Ford E-Tourneo Custom will be better to drive

All of the rear seats, no matter which version, can be folded, tilted, and moved around on rails so that you can juggle how much space for people and how much space for luggage you need. The long-wheelbase version can manage as much as 977 litres of luggage depending on how you set the seats up, so you’re not going to be short of space for bags.

If you’re hauling kids around, it’s good to know that there are also lots of ISOFIX anchor points in the back for child safety seats. The massive sliding side doors — one on each side, and they slide electrically as standard — make loading and unloading people from the back seats so much easier.

Standard equipment includes a ten-inch multimedia touchscreen with navigation, ten-inch digital instrument panel, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, heated driver’s seat, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, rear parking sensors and auto-retracting door mirrors.

If you want some proper luxury, the high-spec Excel model comes with leather upholstery, rear privacy glass, heated front passenger seat, power driver’s seat adjustment with memory setting, front seat massage function, reversing camera, 180-degree camera and ten-speaker audio system.

Mixing lots of seats with electric power means that the Toyota Proace Verso electric is pretty pricey — the same cost as a sporty electric saloon such as the Tesla Model 3 or BYD Seal. That said, you have to offset the lower running costs for an electric car, so the Verso will work out more affordable in the long run than it initially looks. It’s also considerably more affordable than the seven-seat version of Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz, and massively cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz EQV.

Toyota Proace Verso Electric FAQs

The official WLTP range on one charge of the new 75kWh battery pack for the Toyota Proace Verso Electric is 214 miles. Being realistic, you’ll get closer to 180 miles in daily driving, and probably less than that if you’re carrying a full complement of passengers.

The Toyota Proace Verso electric can be charged on AC power (that’s at home or using a kerbside charging point) at 7.4kW as standard, or optionally up to 11kW power. That allows a full charge in 6-11 hours, depending on the charging speed. For DC high-speed charging, the Proace Verso Electric can handle charging speeds of up to 100kW, which means a 10-80% charge is possible in about 45 minutes.

The B-button for the Toyota Proace Verso Electric is basically a way of ramping up the electric braking. By switching to B mode — done by pressing the button down by the gear selector — you’re instructing the Proace to use a stronger form of brake energy recuperation, which means using the electric motor to slow the car down when you lift off the accelerator.

This can give you better control when driving at low speeds in urban areas, as well as allowing you to top up the battery a little more, as the energy from braking can be converted into electricity. As you press the brake pedal, the physical brake discs and pads take over to bring the Proace to a full stop.
