Find out more about the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric

Is the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric a good car?

The Vauxhall Combo Life Electric is a practical MPV that offers plenty of interior space and seating for up to seven people. Being able to seat seven in an EV isn't that common, and if you can look past the van-based styling, then you’ll appreciate just how well suited it is in its role as an affordable family-friendly carry-all MPV.

The Combo Life Electric’s underpinnings are shared with several other small vans and MPVs on the market, (most notably the Citroen e-Berlingo and Peugeot e-Rifter, which are near-identical n the surface and below) and in this application the 134bhp electric motor is more than up to the job of whisking you around town, even when fully loaded. The 50kWh battery pack can deliver up to 174 miles of range in mixed driving, which isn't great, and the eagerness of your right foot and choice of driving mode (Eco, Normal or Power) will have a strong bearing on how close you get to this figure. A 100kW rapid charger will get the battery from 0-80% in 30 minutes, while a 7.4kW wallbox can do the job in 7.5 hours. Depending on the length of your daily commute and proximity to a charger, the Combo Life Electric can be very economical to run.

It may look like a van, but the interior is more akin to a family car. Material quality is more hard-wearing than outright luxurious, but that’s no bad thing considering its intended purpose. An 8.0-inch infotainment display is standard on all trims and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You have your pick between Design and Ultimate trim levels. The lower trim comes with cruise control, rear parking sensors and roof rails, while the Life Ultimate trim adds a 10.0-inch digital instrument cluster, 180-degree camera, automatic air conditioning and sat nav.

There are also two body lengths to choose from, the regular length M version and extended wheelbase XL. Both can be had with either five or seven seats, with the XL model offering additional boot space. Thanks to the van bodystyle, headroom is very generous, and adults will be quite happy in the first two rows. Twin sliding slide doors are standard and work great in the tight confines of a shopping mall parking lot.

Vauxhall claims there are 27 different storage compartments, including a handy overhead storage console. The boot is very spacious too, with almost 600 litres of space in the five-seat models, and 850 litres in the XL seven-seat versions. Fold all the rear seats down in the XL and you can pack in a very van-like 2,593 litres of cargo.
