Is the Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric a good car?
Looking for an eco-friendly, spacious, practical family vehicle that can carry up to nine occupants and doesn’t cost a bundle to run? That’s one tall order, fulfilled by the equally tall – and long – Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric. It's a bit like the car version of an electric light railway - can take plenty of people and has a low environmental impact, but won't get you that far.
It's very, very, closely related to the Peugeot e-Traveller and Citroen e-Spacetourer, in that they're almost identical save the badges. And you won’t mistake the Vivaro Life for anything but a van from the outside, but the interior looks far more car-like. And it’s way more configurable than any regular family car, too. You can pick from medium and long length models, and several different seating configurations.
All models are now powered by a 134bhp electric motor paired to a 50kWh battery pack. Vauxhall claims a driving range of 143 miles on a charge, which really isn't very far, and you get Eco, Normal and Power driving modes.
Using a 100kW fast charger can get the battery from 0-80% in 30 minutes. The onboard 7.4kWh charger will do the job in 7.5-hours. The optional 11kW onboard charger cuts the time down to 5-hours.
The Vivaro Life is way more configurable than any regular family car, too. You can pick from medium and long length models, and several different seating configurations
The base Combi trim looks the most van-like with its 16-inch steel wheels but does come standard with a 7.0-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and is the only trim that allows seating for nine occupants.
Next up is the Design trim, body-coloured bumpers, smarter 17-inch wheels and front fog lights give it a visual boost, and tinted rear windows and rear parking sensors are also included. Max seating capacity is reduced to eight.
Ultimate spec adds features like bi-colour 17-inch alloys, sat nav, leather seats and electrically operated sliding side doors. Cruise control, Emergency brake assist and lane departure warning are standard across the trims.
Fold all the rear seats down on the medium length versions and you get 3,900-litres of storage space. This expands to 4,500 litres on the long wheelbase versions. Leave the seats in place and you still get 1,384 litres of space if you pack your bags all the way to the roof line.
