Volkswagen Golf GTD (2013-2020) interior

The Golf GTD – like the GTI and R – gets the best versions of the Mk7 Golf’s interior, so you’ll struggle to find a nicer place to sit.

Style

The GTD stands out from other Golfs thanks to a flat-bottomed steering wheel trimmed in leather and lots of shiny black trim

Marking the GTD out from non-sporty models are its shiny black trim pieces, honeycomb-style door inserts and flat-bottomed sports steering wheel. Manual cars get VW’s golf-ball gear knob and we would also strongly advise skipping the optional leather interior in favour of the retro-cool that is the Jacara Grey fabric trim.

The cabin is as classy as in any high-spec Golf and the sporty seats are a great addition

Infotainment

The GTD stands out from other Golfs thanks to a flat-bottomed steering wheel trimmed in leather and lots of shiny black trim

The GTD comes as standard with VW’s Discovery Navigation system, which is nice to look at and easy to use.

The 2017 facelift added the option to have the 9.2-inch Discover Pro infotainment system, which has gorgeous graphics, plus responds quickly to prods and swipes. It also features gesture control, so you can wave your hand to scroll through menues– but it’s a fiddly gimmick. Also, we would rather the regular system’s volume knob hadn’t been replaced with small, touch-sensitive buttons.

Another new addition is the Active Info Display – a sharp, 12.3-inch screen that replaces the traditional rev-counter and speedo dials. It can display sat-nav directions via a huge map – helping add some pizazz to the GTD’s cabin.

Finally – for the first time in a Golf – you can charge your phone wirelessly and get an in-car internet connection.
