Volvo has just confirmed a new ES90 electric saloon, and it’ll provide a left-field alternative to cars like the BMW i5.

  • New Volvo ES90 teased
  • Luxury saloon car to return as an EV
  • Sleek silhouette shown during a conference
  • Parts sharing with EX90 likely
  • Full reveal expected next year

Volvo has just announced its latest new electric car at a reveal event for the updated XC90. The new ES90 will be a luxury saloon car designed to take on the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE.

We only have a darkened silhouette to go off for now, but it would seem likely that the new saloon would share many parts with the EX90 SUV.

New Volvo ES90 design

This teaser shot is your only look at the Volvo ES90 for now, but you can already tell it’s got a sleek and sporty profile.

New Volvo ES90 teaser

The Volvo S90 saloon disappeared from UK showrooms a few years ago, however you can see a few similarities to that car in this silhouette. It has an almost coupe-esque roofline and a steeply-raked windscreen, and you can just about see the LIDAR sensor on the roof for Volvo’s advanced safety systems.

Expect similar design cues to other Volvo EVs, such as the EX30 (pictured)

So what can you expect this car to look like when the covers are pulled off? Well a similar “Thor’s hammer” headlight design to the EX30 and EX90 is almost a certainty, as are some C-shaped LED tail lights like you found on the old S90.

New Volvo ES90 motors and batteries

Volvo hasn’t spilled the beans on what’s powering the ES90 yet, however you can expect it to share parts with the EX90 SUV.

This means it’s likely to use a 111kWh battery, a pack which gives the EX90 up to 365 miles of range. In this lower and sleeker saloon it could go even further than this on a charge. The EX90 is also offered with either 408hp or 517hp dual-motor setups which are also likely to be carried over.

When can I buy the new Volvo ES90?

Not for a while yet. A full reveal of the new Volvo ES90 is coming next year, so expect to see it hit the showrooms towards the end of 2025. A price tag of around £70,000 is likely, as this would put it in line with cars like the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE.
