10 best Dacia Bigster alternatives you can buy right now

October 29, 2024 by

Dacia revealed its largest SUV to date earlier this year. The appropriately-named Bigster may look very similar to the Duster, but it offers a cavernous boot and new hybrid engine for less than £30,000.

You’ll have to wait until early 2025 to get your hands on a new Bigster, but what if you simply can’t wait that long? Well here are 10 great-value alternatives to consider.

The best Dacia Bigster alternatives in 2024 are:

  1. Citroen C5 Aircross
  2. Skoda Karoq
  3. Nissan Qashqai
  4. Renault Symbioz
  5. MG HS
  6. BYD Atto 3
  7. Kia Sportage
  8. Dacia Jogger
  9. Skoda Octavia Estate
  10. Used Cupra Ateca

1. Citroen C5 Aircross

Citroen C5 Aircross

When it comes to bang-for-buck, very few SUVs come close to the Citroen C5 Aircross. It costs the same as some small hatchbacks, but it offers a cavernous boot and loads of standard equipment, as well as smart exterior styling.

Admittedly it does feel a bit cheap on the inside, and the infotainment system is a bit dated. This can easily be forgiven at this price though, and the C5 Aircross is also really comfortable to drive.

2. Skoda Karoq

Skoda Karoq

Skoda has a long-standing reputation for no-nonsense practicality, and the Karoq is testament to this. It won’t set the automotive world alight, but it’s a cracking family SUV which is brimming with clever touches to make your life easier.

Things like the ice scraper in the fuel filler cap, the umbrella in the front door and the clip in the windscreen to hold your parking tickets make you realise that Skoda thought of everything, and the boot is a really good size as well.

3. Nissan Qashqai

Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai is probably one of the first cars which comes to mind when you think of a family SUV. It’s been the go-to model for thousands of parents over the years, and with good reason. It offers loads of kit, it’s comfortable and it represents great value for money.

It may not have the biggest boot in this class – it certainly doesn’t hold a candle to the Bigster’s cavernous load area – but look past this and you have a smart-looking family car which is very pleasant to drive.

4. Renault Symbioz

Renault Symbioz

This is a newcomer into the SUV market. The Symbioz is essentially a longer version of the Renault Captur with more interior space and a bigger boot, and as such you get the same economical hybrid engine as that car.

It may not have as much boot space as the Bigster, but for around the same price as we expect the Dacia to cost you get a very stylish SUV with an excellent infotainment system – and it’s comfortable out on the road, too.

5. MG HS

New MG HS

Here’s another great-value offering, this time from MG. The new HS is a seriously impressive SUV which has a big boot, spacious rear seats and shed-loads of tech on board – all for a bargain price.

You can also get the HS with a plug-in hybrid petrol engine which will do up to 75 miles on electric power alone. It’s not as good to drive as some alternatives, and the infotainment system is fiddly to use, but it’s hard to ignore the sub-£25,000 price tag.

6. BYD Atto 3

BYD Atto 3

Maybe you’ve decided it’s time for an electric SUV, but you don’t want to spend a fortune. Check out the BYD Atto 3. It’s comfortable to drive and well-equipped, and there’s loads of storage space up front.

Things aren’t quite as good in the rear, where headroom is limited and the boot isn’t massive. However if you can look past this the Atto 3 has plenty going for it including decent driving range and a solid interior.

7. Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage

Kia offers one of the best warranties on the market, with your new Sportage getting seven years or 100,000 miles of coverage for peace of mind. The Sportage has more to offer than an impressive warranty as well, because it’s also got a lovely cabin and loads of kit.

The front-end styling may not be to everyone’s taste, and there are more comfortable SUVs on the market as well, but the Sportage has an excellent range of hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines to make up for this.

8. Dacia Jogger

Dacia Jogger front

Perhaps you’re looking for something with seven seats which won’t break the bank? Well the Dacia Jogger has you covered. A sub-£20,000 seven-seater is pretty much unheard of these days, and you can trade the rearmost chairs for a cavernous boot as well.

The 1.0-litre petrol engine is a bit weedy in a car like this, however you can also get the Jogger with a 1.6-litre hybrid which is a better fit. The Jogger is also comfortable to drive day-to-day.

9. Skoda Octavia Estate

Skoda Octavia Estate

SUVs aren’t the be-all and end-all of family transport; the humble estate car is still a great option. The Skoda Octavia Estate’s boot is almost as large as the Bigster’s, and it has acres of interior space as well.

Estate cars don’t have quite the same kerb appeal as SUVs, and the Octavia’s design certainly won’t get you admiring glances from onlookers, but it’s a solid, economical and practical family car for a great price.

10. Cupra Ateca (used)

Cupra Ateca

What if you want hot-hatch performance in an SUV package? Well for the same price as the Bigster you can get a three-year-old Cupra Ateca. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 300hp, and it’s good fun to drive on a twisty road.

The trade-off for this is firm suspension, which makes it less comfortable than other SUVs on the market. It’s still a good family car though, with a big boot and spacious rear seats. It’s an ideal candidate if you need to trade your hot hatchback in for something a bit more practical.
