Is a used Kia EV6 a good car?

The Kia EV6 is a striking-looking electric car that straddles the gap between an SUV and a large hatchback. It’s pretty much as good to drive as it is to look at, too — rather like finding that some gorgeous Hollywood celebrity is friendly and nice in real life.

A 2024 facelift gave the EV6 a more angular front end, but the earlier, curvier-looking models still look excellent, and they’re not giving all that much away to the new version in terms of performance and range.

Inside, the EV6 is hugely roomy — there’s stretch out space in the back seats, while the front feels almost decadent in the amount of space you get — although headroom isn’t as generous as you might think.

The only letdown is the boot, which at 490 litres is fine, but it’s nothing compared to the vast 585-litre space offered by a Skoda Enyaq.

The 2024 update gave the EV6 a bigger 84kWh battery, but the older 77kWh version still has a very good range, and you should easily be able to reach 270-290 miles on one charge, depending on the weather and conditions. You get mega-fast charging, too.

What to look for when buying a second hand Kia EV6

Although Kia generally has a good reputation for reliability and it does have that excellent warranty, the EV6 does seem to have some bugbears including problems with the on-board 12-volt battery (that’s the smaller battery which looks after things like seat heating and central locking), the main electric motor, and the dashboard electronics. Air conditioning compressor problems are also not unknown.

Kia EV6 FAQs

Yes, but only the Tesla Superchargers that have been opened for use by other EV brands, which isn’t quite all of them yet. You’ll also need to open an account with Tesla through that company’s smartphone app.

At home, an EV6 will take around 12 hours to fully charge from flat, but when you get to a seriously powerful fast-charger, the EV6 beats almost all-comers with an 18-minute time for charging from 10-80%.

Initially, the EV6 came with a 77kWh battery pack, but an update in late 2024 brought along a new battery with more capacity — 84kWh.

It varies depending on the model, but the longest official range is 361 miles. Around 300 miles is a realistic daily driving figure, except for the powerful GT model which will average closer to 250 miles.

The EV6 is actually quite a big car. It has a low roof, which tricks you into thinking that it’s compact, but actually it’s 4,695mm long, and 1,890mm wide — comparable to a Volvo XC60.

That depends on the model. The ‘regular’ 225hp rear-drive model gets from 0-60mph in a respectable 8.4 seconds, but if you want the ultimate performance, the 585hp GT version does the same sprint in just 3.5 seconds. So fairly fast and very fast respectively…

The Kia EV6 has five seats, but the middle rear seat is quite narrow, so realistically it’s a four-seater.

Yes, there are two EV6 models with four-wheel drive — a standard version with 320hp from its two electric motors, and the wild GT model with 585hp.

Yes, but also no. The EV6 is taller than you’d think, and certainly wider and longer too, but its roof is relatively low and sleek, so it probably doesn’t quite technically qualify as an SUV. Think of it more as a big hatchback.

The EV6 isn’t as reliable as you might think, with common issues including problems with the 12-volt battery, with the electric motors, and the air conditioning system.

The EV6 was first launched in 2021.

The EV6 is made at Kia’s factory in Hwaseong, South Korea.
