Audi Q3 vs Volvo XC40 – Which Premium SUV is Better?

Posh SUVs are all the rage these days, and there are dozens out there to choose from. Two which stand out are the Audi Q3 and the Volvo XC40, and both are excellent cars. To find out which is best though we’re going to compare them side-by-side.

Design and Interior

The Volvo XC40 is just as stylish as you’d expect a Scandinavian SUV to be. The clean lines and chunky stance help it really draw attention, especially if you go for the range-topping Ultra model because that gets larger alloy wheels and a different grille.

Inside the XC40 looks just as cool, with a sleek and minimalist design and plenty of posh materials. It doesn’t feel quite as solid as the Audi, but the design is more interesting to look at.

The Audi Q3 looks much more restrained on the outside. It’s a handsome-looking thing, but it’s a bit anonymous compared to the chic-looking Volvo. This theme continues on the inside, where quality is excellent but everything looks a bit dour. An all-new Q3 is coming this year though, and that car may remedy this.

For now though, the Volvo XC40 is the more stylish option here, and the interior is a nicer place to spend time.

Technology and infotainment

Both of these cars come with good infotainment systems, but the XC40’s is a bit easier to use. It has Google services built in, so operating it is a bit like using your phone. Everything is intuitive and seamless. That said, the Audi Q3 does have physical buttons for the climate control which are easier to use when you’re on the move.

As for other tech, the Volvo comes absolutely packed with safety systems. As standard you get adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assist and a reversing camera. You also get a lot of these features on the Audi, but things like adaptive cruise control are optional extras on that car.

Both of these cars come packed with tech, but the Volvo is slightly better equipped as standard.

Space and Practicality

The Volvo XC40 is slightly smaller than the Audi Q3, making it easier to manoeuvre in tight streets. Despite this, it still offers a good amount of interior space.

The Audi Q3 benefits from being slightly longer and therefore offers more boot space, making it better for carrying lots of luggage. Both cars are pretty much on par for rear passenger space though.

Therefore, the Audi is the better choice for those who need to carry more, but there’s not much in it in terms of practicality in the cabin.

Engines and driving

The Audi Q3 clearly has the upper hand in engine choice. Petrol and diesel versions are available, and all-wheel drive is offered for an additional cost.

The options range from the entry-level petrol engine with 150hp and front-wheel drive to the 245hp top model with all-wheel drive.

The Volvo, however, offers only two mild-hybrid petrol engines, both with front-wheel drive and 163 or 197hp. If you’re looking for a diesel or plug-in hybrid, you won’t find them here. In terms of fuel economy, the Volvo can manage up to 43mpg, while the Audi tops out at 50mpg.

Both of these SUVs are nice to drive, but the Volvo is a little bit more comfortable over bumps. Neither are what you’d call sporty though, and if it’s fun you’re after then check out the BMW X1.

These cars are pretty close in terms of price. The Volvo XC40 starts from £36,500, while the Q3 costs from £35,100.

However, it’s worth noting that the Volvo comes with better standard equipment. The Audi starts at a lower price but can quickly become more expensive with optional equipment.
