Family SUV Comparison: Is the Audi Q3 Worth It, or Should You Go for the Ford Kuga?
February 26, 2025 by Jamie Edkins

If you’ve got around £35,000 to spend on an SUV, you could buy an Audi Q3. It’s a properly posh small SUV which is really comfortable to drive, but it’s not the most practical. For the same money you could buy the more spacious and practical Ford Kuga, which is also more generously equipped and more fun to drive.
But which one should you buy? Well, we’re going to compare them to find out.
Ford Kuga vs Audi Q3 – Design and interior

The Ford Kuga is a sporty-looking SUV, while the Audi Q3 is a bit more understated. Neither are particularly exciting to behold, but both are handsome and inoffensive. Both all look better in their sporty trims as well – S-Line for the Q3 and ST-Line for the Kuga.

The two cars are easier to distinguish inside though, because the Audi Q3 feels significantly more upmarket. It’s more solidly built using posher materials than the Ford, and the interior design is a bit more classy as well.
Ford Kuga vs Audi Q3 – Driving Experience and Engines
The Ford Kuga is offered with either a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 2.5-litre self-charging hybrid or a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid. The latter will do up to 42 miles on electric power alone, which is handy for wafting around town in silence.

The Q3, on the other hand, isn’t available with a hybrid, but unlike the Ford you can have a diesel. This is ideal for getting the best fuel economy on long journeys. However company car drivers will be better off with the plug-in hybrid Kuga to get the cheapest company car tax.

In terms of comfort, the Audi has the Ford licked. It glides over bumps in the road and it is super quiet and refined on the motorway, whereas the Kuga can be a bit fidgety and it lets in more road noise. That said, the Ford is more fun when the going gets twisty.
Ford Kuga vs Audi Q3 – value for money
While the Audi Q3 impresses with its premium interior and posh badge, the Ford Kuga offers more space and better standard equipment. The Kuga is around £2,000 cheaper than the Q3, and the Audi’s price will go up rapidly once you start ticking the options boxes.
Conclusion: Which SUV is the better choice?
If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-built SUV with plenty of curb appeal, the Audi Q3 is the better choice.

However, if you’re after more space for the same money, and don’t mind sacrificing the posh badge, the Ford Kuga is well worth considering. It’s packed with standard kit, good to drive and offers more interior space, making it the more sensible choice for families.
