Mercedes-Benz AMG A35 (2019-2023) interior

The cabin in the Mercedes-AMG A35 is undoubtedly one of its strongest points. It’s wonderfully designed, works fantastically and is easy to use but desirable kit makes the price add up fast.

Style

One area where the Mercedes-AMG A35 really does stand out is its interior – it looks like that of no other hot hatch. The two free-standing digital screens that sit on the top of the dashboard are the dominating feature, but there are lots of other clever touches. There are as many as 64 colours of ambient lighting on offer, and this is also featured in the beautiful turbine-style air vents.

There are lots of decent materials throughout the cabin, too, which all lend to a feeling of good quality. The leather sports seats and flat-bottomed, leather-trimmed sports steering wheel are two highlights. There are less impressive bits, though, as some of the gloss black materials seem prone to scratches and the row of switches under the centre console feels like something from a child’s toy.

The optional Premium equipment line is a very tempting prospect. It might not be cheap, but it adds a larger instrument cluster, illuminated door sills and the 64-colour ambient lighting, while the Premium Plus line also includes a panoramic sunroof.

Infotainment

The Mercedes-AMG A35 comes with two prominent digital displays on the dashboard. They’re both 7-inch screens as standard, but either one – or both – can be upgraded to a 10-inch unit with the optional Executive, Premium and Premium Plus equipment line packages.

The standard kit list is quite good, with DAB digital radio and satellite-navigation two particularly welcome bits. The many ways to control all the technology are pretty impressive too.

You get tiny touch-sensitive panels on the steering wheel, a touchpad on the centre console, and the display in the centre of the dash is a touchscreen. You can even tell your car what to do, by talking to it, just like you would with Amazon Echo or Google Home personal assistants. You can use everyday language in theory, but it might take a couple of goes for it to get what you want. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard-fit features, too.

Also worth considering is the Advanced Navigation package, which superimposes navigation instructions – such as which turning to take off a roundabout or which direction to turn at a junction – on a live view of the road in front of the car, taken from a camera in the windscreen.
