10 used alternatives to the Dacia Bigster
January 16, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
Car changing is a big deal
The new Dacia Bigster is a bargain among new cars, but what could you bag yourself on the second hand market for the same price?
The new Dacia Bigster is available to order now, and at £24,995 there are no other cars which offer this level of space and equipment for the money. It’s this value for money which earned it the prize of Most Anticipated model in the Carwow Car Of The Year Awards.
To get close to the Bigster in terms of space and equipment for this money you’ll have to look to the used market, and we’ve gathered 10 of the best second-hand alternatives to consider for £25,000 or less.
The best used Dacia Bigster alternatives are:
- Renault Austral
- Nissan Qashqai
- Audi Q5
- Volkswagen Tiguan
- Kia EV6
- Skoda Superb Estate
- Kia Sportage
- Toyota RAV4
- Volvo XC60
- Jaguar F-Pace
Renault Austral
You can pick up a 2024 Renault Austral for less than £25,000 these days, and this stylish SUV has a lot going for it. There’s loads of interior storage, you get three ISOFIX anchor points and the cabin is a stylish place to eat up the miles.
The rear seat may not be as spacious as some alternatives, and it’s not the most comfortable over bumps either. Still, the Austral is good on fuel and packed with tech. Some are even fitted with rear-wheel steering to make tight manoeuvres easier, although it was a scarcely-fitted option.
Nissan Qashqai
If you’re after a no-nonsense family SUV which is comfortable to drive and loaded with standard equipment, the Nissan Qashqai has long been the go-to. A new one is over £5,000 more expensive than a Bigster, but well-specced used 2024 examples can be found within your budget.
The Qashqai’s boot may not be as spacious as the Bigster’s, but the Qashqai is still a solid and practical family runaround, and it’s a smart-looking thing as well.
Audi Q5
Maybe you want something with more of a premium image; well if you’re willing to get something a bit older the Audi Q5 could fit the bill. A 2019 example in sporty-looking S-Line trim can be yours for less than £25,000.
It’s a handsome-looking thing with a luxurious interior, and the Q5 is lovely to drive as well. You’ll have to hunt around to find one which is specced up with all the toys though, because a lot of the options were very expensive when new.
Volkswagen Tiguan
The latest Volkswagen Tiguan may be out of reach for £25,000, but you can find plenty of previous-generation cars for this sort of money. A quick search on Carwow brought up loads of 2021 and 2022 cars with the 2.0-litre diesel engine and an automatic gearbox.
It’s a properly posh family SUV with a spacious interior and loads of standard equipment. It may not be the most exciting thing to look at, but it is a supremely comfortable long-distance cruiser.
Kia EV6
For the same price as a Dacia Bigster you could get yourself one of the best electric SUVs on the market. A 2021 Kia EV6 will cost you around £25,000, and that’ll buy you the GT Line with plenty of standard equipment.
It’s stylish and great to drive, and you can even power appliances like fridges and kettles using the car’s battery when you’ve stopped. The boot may not be as large as the Bigster’s, but it’s still practical nonetheless.
Skoda Superb Estate
You don’t need an SUV in order to enjoy cavernous practicality, as proven by the Skoda Superb. This estate car has an enormous 660-litre boot, 46 litres more than the Bigster’s, and you get palatial rear legroom as well.
Our £25,000 budget will get you into a 2020 model with decent spec and a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and there are a few plug-in hybrids floating around for the same price as well. It may not have the same kerb appeal as an SUV, but the Superb excels as a comfortable and practical family car.
Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage comes with an excellent seven-year warranty, and with your £35,000 budget you could buy a 2024 example with more than six years of coverage remaining. Not only do you have this added peace of mind, the Sportage is also a spacious SUV with a smooth hybrid engine.
The exterior styling may not be to everyone’s taste, but the interior is a lovely place to spend time with material quality which could rival more premium brands.
Toyota RAV4
With a starting price of over £40,000, a new Toyota RAV4 is more than £15,000 more expensive than the Dacia Bigster. You can grab a 2021 example for less than £25,000 though, and it’s a bit of a bargain at that price.
All RAV4s come with very generous standard equipment and a fuel-efficient hybrid engine, and it’s very comfortable to drive as well. Some of the interior plastics are a bit scratchy, but it does all feel very robust and hard-wearing.
Volvo XC60
There are few SUVs as effortlessly cool as the Volvo XC60. It looks great, has a well-made cabin and you get all the latest safety tech as well. For £25,000 you can get a 2019 R-Design model with sporty styling upgrades and a punchy 2.0-litre petrol engine.
The infotainment system is starting to show its age, and the XC60 doesn’t have a massive boot either. This is easy to look past though once you set off and realise that this is a comfy cruiser with loads of interior space.
Jaguar F-Pace
If you’re after an SUV with a sporty twist the Jaguar F-Pace is a great option. You can grab a 2019 model with a powerful diesel engine within budget, and this is a properly fun car to drive on a twisty road.
It’s also comfortable when you want to settle down and cruise home. Jaguar doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability though, so you may have to budget for some repairs in the future.
