10 cool used cars for the price of a Land Rover Defender
November 05, 2024 by Jamie Edkins
Car changing is a big deal
The Land Rover Defender is an effortlessly cool off-roader, but there are plenty of awesome cars you could buy for the same money. Let’s chuck our sensible hats away for a moment…
If you’ve got £60,000 plus to spend on a new car, you could get yourself a Land Rover Defender 110. It’s a fantastic SUV with cool styling and a practical cabin, plus it can tackle any terrain with ease.
It’s a pretty solid choice, but what if you don’t want to be sensible? There are loads of cool options out there for petrolheads to dream about for this sort of money, including an Italian exotic. Let’s take a moment to browse the classifieds with a budget of up to £70,000, seeing that this is what you’re likely to spend on a Defender by the time you’ve specced the right engine and added some options.
- Jaguar F-Pace SVR
- Mercedes-AMG S65 coupe
- Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo
- Porsche 911 Turbo S (991)
- Audi RS4 Avant
- Range Rover SV Autobiography
- BMW M8 Gran Coupe Competition
- Aston Martin Vantage
- Bentley Bentayga
- Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder
1. Jaguar F-Pace SVR
Let’s say you fancy a posh SUV which is tuned for having fun on the tarmac, the Jaguar F-Pace SVR could be just what you’re looking for. It’s fabulous to drive with sharp handling which could rival some sports saloons, and the thunderous 5.0-litre V8 sounds fantastic.
You won’t be winning any economy contests, but the Defender isn’t exactly a fuel-sipping hatchback is it? We found a 2023 F-Pace SVR for sale with 14,000 miles on the clock for £62,500, so well within our budget.
2. Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe
The Mercedes-AMG S65 Coupe is about as far from a Land Rover Defender as it’s possible to get. This slinky V12-powered luxury barge is a fantastic-looking thing, and there are few cars better suited for cruising across continents.
Obviously it’s nowhere near as practical as a Defender, but it has loads of space up front and a big boot so you and your significant other will have plenty of space for your luggage as you embark on a long road trip. A 2015 S65 can be yours for around £65,000.
3. Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo
Maybe you fancy a posh EV? Well the Porsche Taycan is a great choice. This is the Turbo Cross Turismo model as well, meaning it’s blisteringly fast and has a raised ride height and mild off-road ability. It won’t worry a Defender when the going gets tough, but crossing a muddy field won’t be an issue.
It’s not the most exciting Porsche to drive, but it still feels pretty nimble for a heavy electric car. It’s also more practical than the standard Taycan thanks to the estate-style body. We found a 2021 model with 18,000 miles on the clock for £65,000.
4. Porsche 911 Turbo S (991)
The Taycan is a lovely thing, if you’re a keen driver you really can’t beat a 911. Well you can get one of the best examples, the 991 Turbo S, for under £70,000. We found a 2013 model with low miles just within budget.
It has a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with 560hp, and there are few supercars which can launch quite as well as the 911. It’s also a riot to thrash around a track, while still being comfortable enough to use everyday.
5. Audi RS4 Avant
Here’s a car which can do it all. The Audi RS4 Avant is stupidly fast, fun to drive and it’s practical for families thanks to the spacious rear seats and big boot. It has a 4.0-litre V8 engine with 450hp, so it’ll give some supercars a run for their money in a drag race.
That engine may not be the most exciting-sounding V8 in the world, but that’s easily fixed with an aftermarket exhaust. You’ll have some money left over for one as well, because the RS4 comes in under budget at £68,000 for a 2024 example with just 3,000 miles on the clock.
6. Range Rover SV Autobiography
If you want to stick with the Land Rover brand, but you’re also looking for something a bit more opulent than a Defender, the Range Rover SV Autobiography fits the bill. It’s the range-topping version of the flagship SUV, meaning it’s about as luxurious as they come.
It’s fast as well thanks to a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, although that does mean it’s pretty thirsty. It’s a small price to pay though for something as posh as this, and a 2019 SV can be yours for £65,000.
7. BMW M8 Gran Coupe competition
The BMW M8 Gran Coupe is a lovely-looking thing with a super-luxurious interior, and it’s absolutely packed with tech. Not only that, it’s also staggeringly fast thanks to the 625hp V8 engine and all-wheel drive system.
When it was new the M8 didn’t represent great value because the M850i was very nearly as good, while being a lot cheaper. On the second hand market though the M8 is a much more tempting proposition, with a 2022 model setting you back around £65,000, over £70,000 less than the cost of a new one.
8. Aston Martin Vantage
We’re getting into proper dream car territory here. Aston Martin makes some of the best-looking sports cars in the world, and the Vantage is a very pretty thing. It’s not a case of style over substance either, because the 4.0-litre V8 sounds great and it’s properly quick.
It’s not quite as good to drive on a track as a Porsche 911, but it’s still great fun on the road. The Vantage probably won’t be a practical decision if you’re also shopping for a Defender, but it’s still a desirable car to dream about having on your driveway.
9. Bentley Bentayga
For the ultimate in luxury motoring, you can’t really beat a Bentley. Our £70,000 budget will just about sneak you into a 2018 model with the 4.0-litre V8 engine, and you’ll feel like a VIP as soon as you climb into the sumptuous leather seats.
The Bentayga has the same issue as a lot of cars here: it’ll be quite expensive to run. That grunty V8 likes to drink a lot, but it’s a price you might be willing to pay to have something as posh as this.
10. Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder
Let’s pretend you’ve taken complete leave of your senses, why not blow that £70,000 on a 15-year-old Italian drop top supercar with a V10 engine? The Lamborghini Gallardo Syder still looks stunning after all these years, and it sounds epic as well.
Modern supercars will leave it standing, as will an electric hatchback as we found out in a drag race, and you’d need to leave thousands of pounds aside for any issues which crop up with a fragile old supercar like this. Owning an old Gallardo is likely to end in tears, but it’s a nice fantasy to have.
