Car changing is a big deal
VW is gradually launching more small electric cars – its latest is the ID2 X, a compact electric SUV. Here’s everything we know so far
Volkswagen has officially confirmed that it will launch the ID2 X – the SUV version of the ID2 hatchback – at the IAA motor show in Munich in September. It will be the fourth small EV the Volkswagen group has revealed recently, and shares a lot with the Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq and VW ID2.
Until now, all that Volkswagen had revealed was the ID2all concept in 2023, with Volkswagen promising it would form part of the ID2 model line-up. Now, VW CEO Thomas Schafer has confirmed that the small SUV will debut at this year’s IAA under the name ID2 X. It’s not yet clear whether this will be a near-production model, or another concept car.
Volkswagen ID2 X – everything we know so far
The ID2 X, unsurprisingly, is based on the same underpinnings as the ID2. This makes it closely related to the Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval, both of which will go on sale before VW’s version.
As the SUV counterpart to the ID2 hatchback, it’s likely to share the same motors and batteries. That means you can expect front-wheel drive, battery sizes between 35kWh and 60kWh, and power outputs ranging from 160hp to 225hp.
This setup should provide the ID2 X with a range of up to 280 miles, and charging speeds allowing for a 10-80% charge in around 20 minutes. In terms of dimensions, the ID2 X is designed with practicality in mind – it’s likely to be a similar size to the Volkswagen T-Roc, which would make it around 4.2m long and 1.8m wide.
As an SUV, it’s likely also to have a bigger boot than the regular ID2, which offers 490 litres with all the seats in place. This could give the ID2 X an edge over physically larger alternatives.
Volkswagen will also fit the ID2 X with advanced tech from its larger cars, including an EV route planner for the mapping software, Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving aids, and advanced Matrix LED headlights.
Volkswagen ID2 X – design
The small electric SUV is unlikely to have the same sort of sporty and aggressive styling as the closely-related Cupra Raval. However, it will be distinctive, with teaser images so far revealing three distinct creases in the rear pillar to bring a touch of personality.

Whether the ID2 X’s interior will be as futuristic as the concept version’s remains uncertain, but given recent criticism, expect VW to bring back more physical buttons – the brand has been slammed for its recent models featuring touch-sensitive keys instead.
Nostalgic elements, such as a digital display styled after classic Golf instrument clusters or even the Beetle’s dashboard, are also a possibility. Volkswagen would certainly not be the first (nor the last) manufacturer to capitalise on retro-inspired designs for modern appeal.
Volkswagen ID2 X – how much will it cost?
VW’s aim is to make small electric cars more affordable, to encourage more widespread adoption of EVs. The ID2 is anticipated to cost around €25,000 (£21,000) – as the ID2 X is an SUV, it will be slightly more expensive. Expect a price tag closer to €30,000 (£25,000).
Further details and the official unveiling will take place at the IAA 2025 in Munich, before the car goes on sale in 2026. The ID2 X could follow shortly after the full launch of the ID2, or come alongside VW’s upcoming electric Polo equivalent – the ID1.
