Smart EQ ForFour interior
The Smart EQ forfour is fun to look at, but some of the quality on offer isn’t great while its infotainment system is feeling long in the tooth
Style
Inside the Smart EQ forfour’s dashboard has a funky design that changes in colour depending on which model you buy. Most of the plastics higher up are of decent quality, but some of those lower down and the Smart’s switches feel cheap.
Entry-level Passion Advanced models come with cloth seats and a black fabric dash insert with great trim, while mid-level Pulse Premium models get a leather steering wheel and stainless steel pedals.
Prime Exclusive cars get leather seats, ambient lighting and black dash trim.
The forfour’s insides are anything but bland, but you’ll be pulling your hair out at times with that infotainment system. Get your smartphone plugged in ASAP!

Infotainment
Smart’s standard touchscreen infotainment system is poor. Its sat-nav truly is one of the worst on sale in terms of direction and traffic information and the 7-inch screen is laggy to use.
Happily, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will eventually come as standard so you can mirror your smartphone instead. Phew.
Later in 2020, there will also be the addition of a larger 10-inch unit, although this, too, will run of the same basic software. Still, you’ll be able to mirror your smartphone in a larger format nonetheless.
All Smarts also come with an EQ app capability, meaning you can view and control various functions in the car via your smartphone. These include things like battery status, range left, the air-con setting, finding parking spots, trip details and even the ability to car share with others.
