About Smart

Smart started in the early 1990s as a collaboration between Mercedes and watchmaker Swatch (yes, really) to make a tiny, affordable, frugal, two-seat city car. Swatch pulled out early on, but Mercedes kept going and introduced the original Smart City Coupe (later the ForTwo) in1998.

These days, Smart is co-owned by Mercedes and Chinese car maker Geely, and it makes chunky all-electric SUVs such as the Smart #1, the Smart #3, and the upcoming Smart #5.

The future of Smart is basically that of an SUV brand, which will be underlined by the overtly rugged #5, which is a proper four-wheel drive off-roader. There are rumours of a return of the tiny two-seat ForTwo in electric form, though.

What our car expert says

“It’s great that there’s loads of interior space in the Smart #3, even with the sloping roof, but you’ll find bigger boots elsewhere.”

Smart FAQs

Smart is now co-owned by Mercedes and Chinese car maker Geely. The cars are jointly-engineered between Germany and China, and they’re made in Geely’s factory in Shanghai.
The new Smart lineup is well-priced, and comes with long-range battery options, but they’re average to drive, have awful infotainment screens, and don’t have anything to set them apart from rivals.
The biggest problem with the new Smart range is the infotainment screen in both the #1 and #3, which is awkward, fiddly, and could be enough to put you off owning the cars entirely.
It’s a bit early to tell with the latest models, but they share their batteries and motors with various Geely and Volvo models, so they’re likely to be solidly reliable.
