Smart has released official teaser images of its new #5 SUV, which will be the largest model the brand’s ever produced.

Set to be unveiled to the public in full on August 28, the #5 looks set to provide an interesting alternative to some of the most popular electric SUVs on sale – including the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Enyaq and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

New Smart #5 design and styling

Gone are the days when Smart was known for producing dinky two-seat city cars – but even by the standards of its current model line-up, the #5 is a big car. Measuring in at more than 4.7m long, it’s about the same length as a BMW X3 or Volvo XC60, putting it firmly in family SUV territory.

In contrast to the curvaceous #1 and #3 the Smart #5 adopts a more upright, squared-off body – the camouflaged images Smart has revealed show a bluff nose with more than a hint of Volvo about it. Meanwhile, the car’s flanks have a distinct shoulder-line running right to the back and a squared-off rear, rather similar to a Citroen C5 Aircross.

There are stylish alloy wheels, and Smart’s ‘C’ logo appears on the C-pillar. Front and rear you can see a distinctive four-bar pattern which, on the #5 Concept, were LED lightbars – it’s likely these are a feature that’s made it through to production.

While the camouflaged car doesn’t have the big off-road wheels, LED task lighting or raised ride height of the #5 concept, it is shown testing on rough terrain, showing that while Smart now describes it as more of a luxury car it’s still hoping to appeal to outdoorsy types.

New Smart#5 batteries, motors and range

As with Smart’s other EVs, the #5 will offer a variety of battery and motor combinations, all inherited from parent company Geely. As the brand’s new flagship, it’ll get a huge battery pack of more than 100kWh in capacity. While official range figures haven’t been released, expect a figure in excess of 340 miles. The Polestar 3 – also a Geely product – can do up to 379 miles with a 111kWh battery.

With high-powered 800V electronics under the skin the Smart #5 should be capable of seriously speedy charging, too – likely the 250kW that its sister cars from Polestar can manage.

A variety of motor combinations and power outputs will be available, too. There’ll be single-motor variants, likely to provide the longest range, with 340 or 363hp. A dual-motor variant will offer 587hp, while the range-topper – expected to be badged as a Brabus – produces a whopping 647hp.

Performance figures haven’t been revealed yet, but you can expect them to be pretty impressive given those hp numbers – a Tesla Model Y Performance can do 0-60mph in 3.5s with just 570hp, after all.

Can a buy a new Smart #5?

Not yet, but you won’t have long to wait. Smart will reveal the #5 to the world at an event in Australia on August 28, which will be livestreamed.

Being Smart’s largest and most powerful model, expect the #5 to also be the most expensive. The #3 starts from around £33,000, so a figure of £40,000+ wouldn’t be unexpected for the #5.

Official pricing, as well as concrete details of the car’s range, performance, model line-up and indeed what the interior looks like will all become clearer after the official reveal on August 28.
