  • Performance and range remain unchanged

Tesla is rolling out a series of small updates across its range of cars, and the latest one is a seven-seat version of the Model Y. The extra row of seats means it’s now a tempting alternative to the Mercedes EQB.

New Tesla Model Y seven-seater: what’s new?

In short – not a huge amount. The overall design remains unchanged, and everything inside from the middle row forwards is also the same. This also isn’t the long-awaited Model Y Juniper facelift either, that’s coming next year.

The only difference is the extra row of seats in the back, making the Model Y even more versatile than before. It makes this one of the few electric seven-seaters which costs less than £60,000, with the exception of the Mercedes EQB which starts from a few thousand pounds less.

It remains to be seen how comfortable it is in the third row, because the Model Y’s sloping roofline could eat into headroom back there. We’ll have to wait until we get hold of the car before casting judgement.

The additional chairs do eat into boot space a bit because they rob you of your underfloor storage, however you still have 753 litres to play with when you fold the third row down. This is around 100 litres less than the five-seat Model Y, but it’s still 168 litres more than a Skoda Enyaq has to offer and it’s a whopping 233 litres bigger than an Audi Q4 e-tron’s boot.

With all seven seats in place you have 363 litres of cargo space, a few litres more than a Cupra Born has, and you still get the 117-litre front boot as well. There’s no penalty in terms of driving range either, because this seven-seater will still do 373 miles on a charge.

How much is the new Tesla Model Y seven-seater?

The seven-seat option is only available on the Tesla Model Y Long Range All-Wheel-Drive, and it’s a £2,500 option. This brings the price up to £54,490, making it £1,700 more than a Mercedes EQB. Order books are open now, with first deliveries starting in the next few weeks.
