Toyota has unveiled its second electric car. The new Urban Cruiser is a small SUV which will sit under the bZ4X, and it’s aiming to take sales away from the Kia EV3.
You’ll be able to choose between 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs, and there will be a dual-motor all-wheel drive version as well. Sales will start in the autumn of 2025.
New Toyota Urban Cruiser design
This is actually the second car from Toyota to wear the Urban Cruiser nameplate – the first was a fairly forgettable small SUV from the late 2000s. This new one looks an awful lot like the new Suzuki e-Vitara, albeit with Toyota – specific front end.
This comes as no surprise when you discover that Toyota has paired up with Suzuki to make this car, so the two are identical under the skin.
The front bumper looks a lot like the one found on the Urban SUV Concept from last year. You have Prius-like headlights which are blended into a black trim strip and wrap around the bonnet, and the grille is hidden lower down.
From pretty much every other angle the Urban Cruiser looks the same as the Suzuki e-Vitara. It has the same squat stance and flared rear wheel arches as that car, and the full-width rear light bar is pretty much identical as well.
New Toyota Urban Cruiser batteries, range and motors
The Urban Cruiser will be available with two battery options, with 49kWh and 61kWh packs on offer. Toyota is remaining tight-lipped on the range until early next year, but you can expect around 250 miles from the larger battery pack if the e-Vitara is anything to go by.
You’ll also be able to choose between two single motor versions, one with 144hp and one with 174hp, and a dual-motor model with all-wheel drive and 184hp will be available too.
New Toyota Urban Cruiser interior and infotainment
Inside it’s very hard to tell the Toyota Urban Cruiser apart from the Suzuki e-Vitara, because the cabins are identical.
It’s a pretty simple design which doesn’t have the same flair of a Peugeot e-2008, but it looks smart enough and it appears to be logically laid out. All cars get a 10.1-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display.
New Toyota Urban Cruiser price and specs
Prices for the new Toyota Urban Cruiser will be revealed next year, but we expect it to cost around £30,000. This would bring it in line with alternatives such as the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30.
You’ll get plenty of kit as standard as well. All Urban Cruisers will get adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, a 360-degree camera system and wireless smartphone mirroring.
