BMW X3 vs Mercedes GLC vs Audi Q5 vs Tesla Model Y
February 01, 2024 by Jamie Edkins
SUVs are all the rage these days, and a big chunk of people will gravitate towards something German. But should you go for the BMW X3, the Mercedes GLC or the Audi Q5, or is the Tesla Model Y more deserving of your cash?
Well in this handy article we’ll be comparing all of these car’s pros and cons, so you can decide which is right for you. Once you’ve decided on your next car, hit the buttons below each model to get the best offers from our network of trusted dealers.
BMW X3
You may not think SUVs can be fun to drive on a twisty road, but the BMW X3 is here to prove that theory wrong. It’s by no means a sports car, but it can definitely put a smile on your face when the going gets twisty. This does mean it’s a bit less comfortable than some alternatives though.
The X3 impresses when you step inside with a solid cabin and lovely materials found throughout. The design may be getting on a bit now, but everything is logically laid out and – unlike newer BMW models – you still get physical buttons for the climate control.
You have a few petrol and diesel engines to choose from, as well as a plug-in hybrid. The 2.0-litre petrol will suit most people’s needs, with a decent blend of nippy performance and fuel economy. If it’s hair-raising performance you’re after, the 3.0-litre M40i version delivers this in spades.
Mercedes GLC
The new Mercedes GLC has the most high-tech cabin here, and it’s a lovely place to spend time. It may not be quite as high-quality as the BMW or the Audi, but the design is much more interesting.
It’s just as impressive on the move, although there’s not much in the way of fun to be had. This isn’t a car which eggs you on to drive quickly down a back road; it’s much better suited to being a comfortable cruiser, something it does very well indeed.
The plug-in hybrid models offer an impressive 80 miles of pure electric range, which means most people can drive around day-to-day without the engine running at all. It is a pricey option though, and the 2.0-litre diesel still offers good economy.
Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 is probably the most reserved choice here. It’s a handsome thing, but it won’t set your world on fire – although going for the S Line does liven things up a bit with bigger wheels and a sporty body kit.
The cabin is beautifully built and logically laid out, however it doesn’t have the same flair as the GLC. At least you do get a good amount of standard equipment and it’s a spacious and practical family car.
There are just three engines to choose from: a petrol, and diesel and a plug-in hybrid. The 2.0-litre petrol is a brilliant all-rounder. It’s smooth, quiet and efficient, all while still offering good performance.
Tesla Model Y
Let’s say you’re after an all-electric family hauler, well the Tesla Model Y is a great choice. It has a cavernous boot, loads of space in the back seats and the minimalist interior is packed with all the latest tech.
That said, the build quality inside isn’t a match for the Germans, and some may not like the bare-bones dashboard layout. The styling is also questionable, with it resembling a Tesla Model 3 which has been stretched on one of those medevil torture racks.
You can choose between a single motor, dual-motor or performance version of the Model Y, and unless you want the face-melting acceleration offered by the Performance the Long Range will suit most people’s needs. It’s still plenty powerful enough, and you’ll get up to 331 miles on a charge.
