Is a used Audi Q2 a good car?

The Audi Q2 is a compact SUV which looks the chunky, go-anywhere part but — rather like trying to take a quilted clutch bag on a camping trip — is really all front. It has the styling of a proper 4x4, but certainly not the ability.

If the upright and square exterior has you expecting a Jeep-style cabin, well Audi has a surprise for you. The Q2’s interior comes with lots of high-quality surfaces and materials, and very neat digital instruments (analogue dials were standard fit until later in the Q2’s life).

It’s not very spacious in the back seats, but at least the boot is a decent size. However, the new MINI Countryman is massively bigger in the boot.

Most used examples will have one of two petrol engines. The small one is actually pretty perky as long as you’re not trying to carry four people and a boot full of luggage, but you’ll definitely want the larger version for long motorway journeys, not least because it’s more refined.

What to look for when buying a second hand Audi Q2

Generally speaking, the Q2 should be solidly reliable, as owners report very few issues. There are some known problems with the S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which can be hesitant to allow acceleration from slow speeds (it’s an inherent issue though, not strictly a reliability problem) and it’s a gearbox that needs careful and regular servicing and oil changes to keep it reliable — beware an automatic Q2 that doesn’t have a full set of service stamps, preferably Audi main dealer ones.

Audi Q2 FAQs

Yes, the Q2 — according to customer reports — seems to be a very reliable car, although Audi has not done at all well in the Driver Power customer satisfaction survey overall.

Not really, no. The only way to get a Q2 with four-wheel drive is to upgrade to the expensive, and expensive-to-run, 300hp S2 ‘Quattro’.

It’s a very compact car, the Q2. At 4.2 metres long, it’s less than a foot longer than a Ford Fiesta, and it’s only 1.5 metres tall.

It shouldn’t be. Audi main dealers will charge top dollar for servicing, but the Q2 is easily serviced by a good independent specialist because almost all of the parts under the skin are shared with the VW Golf. Just keep an eye on S-Tronic automatic gearbox maintenance.

Yes, the Q2 is fuel efficient. The 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines should easily average 45mpg, while an earlier diesel version should top 50mpg without struggling.

Early versions of the Q2 came with 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engines, with the 1.4-litre model later being replaced by a newer 1.5-litre engine. Initially, 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDI diesels were also offered, but these were later dropped.

Although both cars share a lot of common parts, and are built on the same Volkswagen Group mechanical bits, the Q2 is quite a bit smaller than the Q3, with much less space in the back seats and boot.

The Audi Q2 was first launched in 2016.

Mostly, the Q2 is built at Audi’s headquarters factory in Ingolstadt, near Munich but the Q2 has also been built in Foshan in China, and in Relizane in Algeria.
