Drag race: Ford Mustang V8 vs electric BMW Batmobile
July 12, 2022 by Jamie Edkins
For this drag race, Mat’s behind the wheel of the Ford Mustang V8. It has a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, which in standard form puts out 450hp and 530Nm of torque. This example has been tweaked by Clive Sutton with an ECU remap, a new air intake and an uprated exhaust system.
As a result we have 490hp in this car, sent to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. As for weight, the Mustang tips the scales at 1,740kg.
Taking on this American muscle car, we have a BMW E9 CSI. Designed to be a homage to the Batmobile race car of the 1970s, you won’t find a 3.0-litre straight six engine under the bonnet. Instead, this car has the electric motor from a Tesla, driving the rear wheels and powered by an 85kWh battery.
As standard, this powertrain produces 450hp and 400Nm of torque. However, in order to stop the tyres being converted entirely to smoke, the power has been dialed back to around 350hp. It’s a lot lighter than the Mustang though, coming in at around 1,500kg.
So which car will win this battle of old vs new? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
