BMW M5 Touring vs rivals: the ultimate estate car drag race

April 12, 2025 by

BMW has finally brought back the M5 Touring after a 15-year hiatus, and I’ve managed to get hold of this new super-estate for a drag race. It’ll be going up against two other German wagons, and I reckon it’ll be a tight race between two cars in particular.

But first, here are the stats:

Audi RS6 Performance

Because you lot all moan that I always go for the most powerful car, I’ve decided to take the Audi RS6 Performance today and give someone else a chance to win. It has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 630hp and 850Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the RS6 tips the scales at 2,075kg. It’s also the most expensive car here at £120,000 – although you can save an average of over £8,500 on one through Carwow at the time of writing.

Driving the BMW M5 Touring is a man claiming to be Racing Driver Sam, but he looks far too young so I’m not so sure. Anyway, his car has a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor, and combined they put out 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the M5 Touring weighs in at a colossal 2,475kg. It also costs from £113,000, although at the time of writing you can save an average of £3,600 through Carwow.

Finally then we come to Nick in the Mercedes. He has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 612hp and 850Nm of torque, which powers all four wheels via a nine-speed multi-clutch gearbox.

It’s also the lightest car here at 1,995kg, and when it was new it cost around £100,000. You’ve not been able to buy a new E63 S for a few years now, however through Carwow I found a used example from 2021 for just under £60,000.

I think this will be a really close race between the Audi and the BMW. The RS6 has the excellent Quattro all-wheel drive system to get it off the line, while the BMW has a bucketload more power. The Mercedes could pull something out of the hat though, it’s the lightest after all.

Make sure you watch the video to find out what happens.
