December 16, 2020 by Padraig Mallet
Want a hot hatch that offers both luxury and performance? Then perhaps you’re considering the Mercedes-AMG A45 S or possibly the more affordable Mercedes-AMG A35. We’ve decided to pit one against the other to see how they fare in a drag race.
Tap the video to watch the race.
First up is the Mercedes-AMG A45 S. It might look almost identical to the A35, but it’s one of the fastest, most powerful hot hatches ever made.
Just like the A35, the A45 S comes equipped with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with all-wheel drive. However, its 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox is unique to the A45 and its 421hp and 500Nm far outstrips its stable-mates power and torque figures. It’s also the heavier of the two cars, weighing in at 1635kg, and the most expensive – it’ll set you back £50,595.
Next up is the entry-level AMG A35. It to gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, but its peak power is 306hp and the headline torque figure is 400Nm. The gearbox is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and, like the A45 S, it has four-wheel-drive.
The A35 is 80kg lighter than the A45 S, coming in at 1555kg and the model we have here will set you back £38,360.
It looks like the A45 S will take an easy victory, but could the much cheaper A35 pull a few surprises from its bright yellow sleeve? Watch the video to find out.
