Is a used BMW iX3 a good car?

The BMW iX3 is the all-electric version of the popular X3, and competes for your cash with the likes of the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Skoda Enyaq

It looks almost identical to a regular diesel or petrol X3, aside from the grille (which is blanked off) and some small metallic blue details, as well as unique 20-inch alloys.

The iX3 comes with a 286hp electric motor driving the rear wheels, and a battery that’s good for a range of up to 285 miles — although closer to 220 miles is what you’ll get in the real world. That’s less than many of its newer rivals.

The good news is that the iX3 can be charged at up to 150kW on DC power, so fast top-ups are possible.

All versions get big screens on the dashboard, and the iX3’s cabin is seriously well-made and very high quality. It’s roomy too, and has very comfortable front seats.

The iX3’s ‘one pedal’ driving makes for easy and smooth progress in town, but it’s quick on the open road and ultra-refined on motorway runs. It also manages to feel like a proper BMW through the bends, too, and the adaptive suspension is cushy over bumps.

What to look for when buying a used BMW iX3

The BMW iX3 has been recalled twice, for a minor electrical issue and for a software problem, but other than that it seems to be very reliable, although as with any electric car you’ll want to make sure that it comes with a battery health certificate before buying.

BMW finished much higher in the 2024 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey than its main German rivals, coming in 14th place out of 32 brands, with a mid-table ranking for reliability and quality – 21% of owners reported faults with their cars.

The X3 itself — including both the iX3 and the petrol and diesel models — finished in 36th position in the Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, with owners giving it a relatively poor rating for reliability and quality.

BMW iX3 FAQs

On an overnight 7.4kW charger at home, the iX3 will take almost exactly ten hours to charge from flat. It’ll do the same in just 7hrs 30mins on a more powerful three-phase 11kW charger, and from a 150kW DC fast charger, it will take around 34 minutes to reach 80% capacity.

Yes, the iX3 can use a Tesla Supercharger, but only one that’s been opened up by Tesla for use by other car brands. You’ll also need to open an account with Tesla through that company’s smartphone app to use one of its chargers.

The official range of the BMW iX3 is 286 miles, but realistically it will probably do more like 220-240 miles in real world conditions.

No, the BMW iX3 comes with only one electric motor, driving the rear wheels. There has never been a four-wheel drive iX3.

The iX3 is built at BMW’s factory in Shenyang, in China.
