Is a used Citroen e-C4 a good car?

The Citroen e-C4 is a compact electric hatchback, but it’s focused more on value than on outright range.

The e-C4 is good looking, with lots of quirky Citroen design cues, and a bit more ride height than a conventional hatchback, although it would be a stretch to call it an SUV

Inside, the cabin is more conventional, and has a good 10.0-inch touchscreen which is only slightly too fiddly to use. Quality levels are good, and it’s roomy too, with the same space on offer as you’d find in the petrol-powered C4 hatchback.

The 380-litre boot isn’t massive, but if you need more room than that, consider the longer e-C4 X, with its bigger saloon-style boot.

Recently, Citroen gave the e-C4 an upgrade with a 54kWh battery and a 156hp electric motor, stretching the range to 260 miles, but most used versions will still have the earlier 136hp motor and 50kWh battery, and an official range of 217 miles.

What makes the e-C4 stand out is how comfortable it is. The suspension is very soft, although that means that it leans over a lot in corners. It’s a very refined car though.

What to look for when buying a used Citroen e-C4

By and large, the e-C4 seems to be reliable, but as with any second hand electric car, you’ll want to make sure you get a full independent battery health check before buying. We have heard some reports of issues with peeling paint — especially on interior trim — and minor electrical issues (not related to the big battery) but for the most part, the e-C4 seems to be a solid bet.

The e-C4 didn’t make it onto the 2024 Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, but Citroen itself finished in an excellent 5th place in the broader customer satisfaction survey, with a mere 15% of owners reporting faults with their cars.

Citroen e-C4 FAQs

The 50kWh battery version of the e-C4 has 46.3kWh of useable energy storage, so at home, using a 7.4kW charging point, a full charge will take just over six hours. When you’re fast charging, on DC power, the e-C4’s maximum charging rate is 100kW, so it takes around 30 minutes to do a 20-80% charge.

The e-C4 can use a Tesla charger, but only those Tesla Superchargers which have been opened up for use by other electric car brands and drivers. To use one, you’ll have to open an account with Tesla through its smartphone app.

The official range of the e-C4, with the 50kWh battery, is 217 miles.
