If you’re in the market for a family SUV then the Kia Sportage has almost certainly crossed your mind. It’s a fabulous all-rounder with a big boot, loads of interior space, great technology and a class-leading seven-year warranty.
The Sportage won’t be for everyone though, as that front end styling is pretty divisive and there are more comfortable alternatives out there. With this in mind the Carwow team has gathered 10 of the best Kia Sportage alternatives for you to consider.

1. Skoda Karoq
If you’re after an SUV which offers no-nonsense practicality then the Skoda Karoq is well worth considering. It won’t set your pulse racing, but it goes about its business in a comfortable and fuss-free fashion.
It’s spacious, well-equipped and all the tech is easy to use. You’ll want to avoid the sluggish 1.0-litre petrol engine, but go for the 1.5-litre turbocharged unit and you’ll get peppy performance and decent fuel economy.
2. Peugeot 3008
But what if you want something with a bit more je ne se quois? Well the Peugeot 3008 will turn heads wherever it goes thanks to its bold styling. It’s not a case of style over substance either, with plenty of passenger space on offer and a decent-sized boot.
That boot won’t be ideal for owners of big dogs though thanks to the sporty sloping roofline, but it is a decent size for luggage and shopping. Add in a range of efficient engines and a generous list of standard kit and the 3008 becomes very appealing.
3. Volkswagen Tiguan
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a classy family car with a high-quality cabin and an excellent selection of engines, including a plug-in hybrid with a useful electric-only range of 62 miles – over 20 miles more than the Kia Sportage PHEV can manage.
There is a price to pay for this though. The Tiguan is quite a bit more expensive than a lot of its alternatives, but you may be willing to splash that extra bit of cash to have a posh German badge on the nose of your SUV.
4. Kia EV6
Ready to take the plunge and buy an EV? Well the Kia EV6 is one of the best out there. It’s great to drive, offers decent range and it comes with the same brilliant seven-year warranty as the petrol-powered Sportage.
It’s not quite as practical as the Sportage though thanks to a smaller boot, and that sloping roofline eats into rear headroom as well. Still, the EV6 makes up for this with its funky styling and high-quality interior.
5. Hyundai Tucson
The Hyundai Tucson is a pretty obvious Kia Sportage alternative because the two cars share a lot of parts under the skin. Both use the same range of petrol hybrid engines, although the Hyundai is only available with a five-year warranty in comparison to the Kia’s seven.
That said, the Tucson has a bigger boot than the Sportage and it’s even more outlandish in its design. Plus if you’re only planning on keeping it for a three-year lease then the warranty doesn’t matter quite so much.
6. Toyota RAV4
If having a good warranty is important to you then you can’t ignore the Toyota RAV4. It comes with the brand’s excellent “Relax” warranty, which can be extended from five years up to 10 if you keep it serviced on time within Toyota’s dealer network.
Not that you’re likely to need to use it, because the RAV4 is a Toyota hybrid meaning it has a reputation for bulletproof reliability. The cabin may not be as posh as a Sportage’s, but it’s comfortable to drive and well-equipped.
7. Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is a great entry-point into EV ownership because it gives you access to the excellent Supercharger network, making long-distance driving a lot easier. It’s also available with an impressive suite of driver assistance systems.
It may not be the most interesting thing to look at, and it’s not the most comfortable SUV out there, but what the Model Y does have is a cavernous boot – over 260 litres bigger than the Sportage – and there’s loads of rear legroom.
8. Citroen C5 X
Now here’s a difficult car to pigeonhole. The Citroen C5 X is a strange combination of an estate, a hatchback and an SUV, but the resulting model just happens to be one of the most comfortable family cars you can buy. The suspension just wafts over bumps in the road in a manner unparalleled at this price point.
The infotainment system isn’t as slick as the one you get in the Kia, but the interior quality easily matches it. The C5 X has a massive boot as well and loads of rear passenger space.
9. Skoda Octavia estate
The need for a family-friendly, spacious vehicle doesn’t automatically mean you have to buy an SUV, the old-fashioned estate car still makes a great case for itself – and the Skoda Octavia estate is one of the best. It has a massive boot and acres of rear legroom, all for an attractively low price.
It may not have the same curb appeal as an SUV, it looks pretty bland in fact, but if you’re after a sensible family car with low running costs and comfortable suspension then the Octavia is hard to beat.
10. Cupra Formentor
Let’s say you’ve just had a baby and you need to swap your hot hatch for something a bit more spacious, but you don’t want to lose out on those driving thrills. Well the Cupra Formentor is essentially a Leon hot hatch on stilts, so it could fit the bill perfectly.
Okay so it’s not quite as spacious as the Sportage, but the Formentor is a head-turning thing with a great interior and a fiery 310hp engine on offer. Just remember not to hoon it too hard with the kids in the back if you don’t want your lovely leather covered in vomit.
