1. Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto really has stood the test of time. It’s been around for over two decades now, and the latest one is still a masterclass in how to build a small, cheap hatchback. It’s packed with kit, solidly built and cheap to buy, although it won’t be much fun on a longer journey thanks to the weedy petrol engines.

2. Skoda Fabia

For the same price as a top-spec Aygo X, you could have the larger and much more practical Skoda Fabia. Not only does it have loads of rear legroom and a massive boot, it’s also really comfortable both around town and on the motorway. The Toyota does offer a lot more equipment as standard though.

3. Hyundai i10

The Hyundai i10 is pretty similar to the Kia Picanto under the skin, and as such offers many of the same benefits. It’s affordable, cheap to run and has a good-sized boot for a car this small, just avoid the automatic gearbox at all costs because it’s pretty dire.

4. Renault 5

Maybe you fancy making the switch to an EV? Well, the new Renault 5 is here and it’s a properly cool-looking electric hatchback with loads of tech on board, including a brilliant Google-based infotainment system. It’s not the most spacious in the back seats, but the 5 is still one of the most desirable EVs around with a funky interior.

The MG3 is one of the best-value hybrid cars on the market today. Not only is it powerful, it’s also well-equipped as standard and pretty good fun to drive. You get a decent-sized boot as well, however it’s a shame that the hybrid engine isn’t quite as fuel efficient as you’d expect.

6. Dacia Sandero

If you’re after value for money, you can’t ignore the Dacia Sandero. It’s over £2,000 cheaper than an Aygo X, despite offering more interior space than that car and an interior which feels much more solid than the bargain-basement price tag would suggest. It’s not as generously equipped as the Toyota though.

7. Renault Clio

For just a smidge more than the Aygo X you could have a Renault Clio, a lovely small hatchback with an interior posh enough to give cars in the class above a run for their money. It has a massive boot, too. The rear seats are a bit snug, but the Clio is still a great-looking option which is nice to drive.

8. Citroen C3

The latest Citroen C3 is a spacious, well equipped small car which is really affordable to buy and nice to drive around town. It’s a funky-looking thing as well, and the cabin has a pretty cool design as well. It does feel cheap in places though, and there’s not much in the way of fun to be had on a twisty road.

9. Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift is a refreshingly simple small hatchback. You get a rev-happy petrol engine which returns fantastic fuel economy, loads of standard equipment inside and a pretty spacious cabin. It does feel pretty cheap inside though, and it’s not as cheap to buy as an Aygo X.

10. Mazda 2

Those looking for some fun behind the wheel will want to look at the Mazda 2. Not only is it a right laugh to chuck down a B-road, it’s also stylish and has a well-made interior. There’s plenty of space to get comfortable in the front, but rear seat space is limited and the boot is pretty small as well.
