The Mercedes GLC is a big deal in the premium SUV world – and for good reason. It’s stylish, packed with tech, and has a premium cabin. But let’s be honest, it’s not the only player in this segment. If you’re after something different, maybe a little cheaper or with a more sporty edge, here are 10 brilliant alternatives to the GLC.
1. BMW X3 – The sporty choice

Looking for something which is both practical and fun to drive? The BMW X3 could be right up your street. With sharp steering and adaptive suspension this SUV feels more like a hot hatch on stilts. The iDrive infotainment system is slick, and there’s plenty of boot space for all your kit. On long motorway journeys, the GLC might have the comfort edge, but if you love driving, the X3 is the better choice.
2. Audi Q5 – A spacious SUV

If it’s practicality you’re after, the Audi Q5 is hard to beat. You get a spacious cabin with roomy rear seats, as well as a massive boot. The tech is decent as well, even if a lot of it is optional. It’s a fantastic motorway cruiser, it’s just a shame it’s not as stylish as the Mercedes GLC.
3. Volvo XC60 – Chic styling and loads of safety kit

The Volvo XC60 is for those who value style and substance in one package. It looks great, both inside and out, but you also get plenty of safety equipment and it’s really comfortable to drive. The infotainment system isn’t great, but the XC60’s classy looks may be cool enough to swing it for you.
4. Porsche Macan – The driving enthusiast’s SUV

Porsche isn’t just about sports cars – the Macan is proof that an SUV can still be thrilling to drive. With precise steering, a plush cabin and top-tier performance, it captures the essence of the 911 sports car in a family-friendly package. The downside? Well it’s not as spacious inside as a GLC, and it’ll be quite expensive to run if you go for the thirsty V6 engine.
5. Lexus NX – The smooth and fuel-efficient hybrid

If reliability and running costs are top of your list, the Lexus NX is a cracking choice. It’s hybrid-only, so you’ll save on fuel, and Lexus build quality means it’ll probably still be running in 20 years. It’s not the most exciting SUV, but it’s well-equipped, super comfortable and well-made.
6. Genesis GV70 – The left-field choice
![](https://carwow-uk-wp-2.imgix.net/GV70-Driving-2.jpg?auto=format&cs=tinysrgb&fit=crop&h=&ixlib=rb-1.1.0&q=60&w=1600)
Never heard of Genesis? It’s Hyundai’s luxury brand, and the GV70 is its answer to the Mercedes GLC. You get a plush interior, loads of kit as standard, and a long warranty. The 2.5-litre petrol engine isn’t very economical, but the GV70 is really comfortable to drive and it looks great as well.
7. Tesla Model Y – The electric alternative
![](https://carwow-uk-wp-3.imgix.net/2025-Tesla-Model-y-front-static-1.png?auto=format&cs=tinysrgb&fit=crop&h=&ixlib=rb-1.1.0&q=60&w=1600)
The Tesla Model Y was given a mid-life update in 2025, and it’s still one of the best EVs out there. Long range, fast charging, and constant over-the-air updates keep it fresh. However, the minimalist interior could take some getting used to and the quality isn’t quite up there with the German competition.
8. Alfa Romeo Stelvio – For Italian flair

Want an SUV with some personality? The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has the style, the handling, and that little bit of Italian magic. The build quality is a bit hit-and-miss though, and it’s not as comfortable as a Mercedes GLC, but few SUVs have the feel-good factor like this one does.
9. Land Rover Discovery Sport – The off-road hero

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a proper go-anywhere SUV with all-wheel drive, serious off-road capability and even an optional third-row of seats. The infotainment system isn’t the best to use, but if you regularly venture off the beaten track then there aren’t many other SUVs which will take you as far as the Discovery Sport.
10. Ford Mustang Mach-E – The wild card
![](https://carwow-uk-wp-2.imgix.net/2020-Ford-Mustang-Mach-E.png?auto=format&cs=tinysrgb&fit=crop&h=&ixlib=rb-1.1.0&q=60&w=1600)
An electric Ford Mustang may seem crazy to die-hard muscle car fans, but the Mach-E is actually rather good. It’s fast, practical, and has decent range. It’s just not as comfortable as some alternatives. But if you want something different, this is a good place to start.
