The 10 best Renault Clio alternatives in 2025

January 30, 2025 by

If you’re after a small hatchback, the Renault Clio is hard to beat. It’s got a massive boot, a lovely interior and great tech, all at an affordable price. So affordable in fact it was highly commended in the Carwow Car Of The Year Awards in the Smart Spender category.

But what if this car doesn’t do it for you? Maybe you want something with more rear legroom, or perhaps you’d prefer something sportier to drive? Well here are 10 of the best Renault Clio alternatives.

  1. Toyota Yaris
  2. Volkswagen Polo
  3. MG4
  4. Vauxhall Corsa
  5. Peugeot 208
  6. Dacia Sandero
  7. Ford Puma
  8. MG3
  9. Seat Ibiza
  10. Audi A1 Sportback

1. Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris stands out for its generous standard equipment and efficient hybrid engine. All models come with luxuries such as adaptive cruise control and automatic wipers, however the boot isn’t as big as the Clio’s and the interior materials are a bit drab. It’s good to drive though, with sporty handling which can put a smile on your face on a twisty road.

2. Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen Polo

If you’re after a small car with the qualities of something larger, the Volkswagen Polo is a great place to start. The interior is posh enough to teach cars in the class above a thing or two, and it’s really comfortable as well. You’ll want to avoid the lethargic entry-level engine, but the mid-level 95hp petrol is both punchy and economical.

3. MG4

MG4 EV

Maybe you’re ready to make the switch to an EV? Well the MG4 represents great value for money. With Carwow discounts you can get one for around the same price as a hybrid Clio. It’s great to drive, packed with tech and stylish to look at, however the infotainment system is a faff to use. The basic model gets 218 miles of range, but you’ll want to step up to Long Range model if you do lots of long journeys as that car will do 288 miles on a charge.

4. Vauxhall Corsa

Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa has been a common sight on British streets for decades, and there’s a reason it’s so popular. You get loads of kit, it’s comfortable to drive and it’s cheap to run, and this is all wrapped up in a smart-looking package. It’s a bit cramped in the rear seats though, and bits of the interior feel cheap.

5. Peugeot 208

Peugeot 208

Under the skin, the Peugeot 208 is pretty much identical to the Corsa, but it’s a lot more stylish both inside and out. The cabin feels like a special place to spend time, and it’s available with a range of efficient petrol and hybrid engines. There’s even an electric version if that tickles your fancy. Like the Vauxhall though, it’s pretty tight in the rear seats.

6. Dacia Sandero

Dacia Sandero

If you’re looking for maximum bang for your buck, the Dacia Sandero is a good place to start. It’s actually very similar to the Clio under the skin, but it starts from just over £14,000, almost £4,500 less than the Clio. It’s not as stylish or well-equipped, but it;’s spacious and comfortable to drive while not feeling as cheap as the bargain price would suggest.

7. Ford Puma

Ford Puma

The Ford Puma was the best-selling car in the UK last year, and for good reason. It’s great fun to drive, has a massive boot and it looks great as well. It’s a bit more expensive than a Clio, although this is mitigated slightly with Carwow discounts, and the cabin feels cheap in places. You do get a lot of tech as standard though.

8. MG 3

MG3

The latest MG3 is a cracking small car with a powerful hybrid engine and loads of standard equipment, all for a reasonable price. It may not be as economical as some alternatives – a Clio hybrid is better on fuel – but you can’t argue with standard-fit adaptive cruise control, reversing camera and smartphone mirroring at this price.

9. Seat Ibiza

Seat Ibiza

The sporty Cupra brand has taken the limelight away from Seat, but the little Ibiza is still a great small car worthy of your attention. It’s a good-looking hatchback which is fun to drive and cheap to buy and run, although the entry-level engine is noisy and bits of the interior feel flimsy.

10. Audi A1 Sportback

Audi A1

You don’t have to spend a fortune to have a posh badge on your bonnet, you could have an Audi A1 for around the same price as a top-spec Clio. It has a lovely, high-tech interior and it’s comfortable to drive, although you do have to be careful with the options list to keep the costs from spiraling.
