10 great second-hand cars for the same price as a Tesla Model Y
January 09, 2025 by Jamie Edkins
There’s no denying that the Tesla Model Y is a great electric SUV. It’s spacious, efficient and loaded with tech, and it’s competitively priced against alternatives like the BMW iX2 and Volvo EC40.
However, if you’re after a proper bargain then there are plenty of great cars for this money on the second hand market. Whether you’re looking for an electric SUV with a sporty edge, or something with a petrol engine, we’ve browsed the classifieds to find 10 of the best used cars for under £47,000 – the same price as a base Tesla Model Y.
The best used cars for Model Y money are:
- BMW iX
- Mercedes EQE
- Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron
- Kia EV6 GT
- Volkswagen ID Buzz
- Volvo XC90
- Range Rover Sport
- Jaguar I-Pace
- Audi SQ7
- Tesla Model X
1. BMW iX
We’re starting strong here with BMW’s flagship electric SUV. The iX is one of the most luxurious and comfortable EVs on the market, and you can pick up a 2022 example for less than a Tesla Model Y.
The exterior styling may not be to everyone’s taste, but you don’t have to look at it while you enjoy the sumptuous interior and brilliant infotainment tech. It’s quick as well, especially for a 2.5-ton electric car.
2. Mercedes EQE
If you bought a brand new Mercedes EQE for over £85,000 back in 2023, you might be disappointed to learn that it’s now only worth around £47,000. This is great news for used buyers though, because it means this luxurious electric saloon can be yours for Model Y money.
For this sort of cash you can get a 2023 AMG Line Premium Plus, which comes loaded with tech and has some sporty styling upgrades such as different alloy wheels and deeper bumpers. It’s still not exactly pretty though…
3. Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron
If you’re after a stylish coupe-SUV, the Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron is a great option. For under £50,000 you can get behind the wheel of a 2023 S Line model, and there’s a lot to like about this electric SUV besides its looks.
It’s comfortable to drive, offers decent interior space and there’s loads of tech on board. Just avoid cars with cameras in place of door mirrors, because these are overcomplicated and not that intuitive to use.
4. Kia EV6 GT
Rewind a decade or so and Kia was known for making dull but worthy family runarounds. Well now it’ll sell you a 577hp electric SUV with enough performance to scare some supercars. Check out this drag race between an EV6 GT and a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
All of this power doesn’t come at the expense of practicality either, because the GT is just as spacious as the standard EV6. It isn’t as comfortable as the standard car though thanks to the stiffened suspension. You can get a late 2024 GT for the same price as a Model Y.
5. Volkswagen ID Buzz
Having a practical family bus doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, as proven by the fabulous-looking Volkswagen ID Buzz. This boxy and cavernous electric MPV is pretty pricey when new, but it’s been around long enough now for used prices to drop below £50,000.
That brick-like shape doesn’t do wonders for the range, and the ID Buzz is plagued by a fiddly infotainment system. Look past this though and you have a comfortable family car which is hugely practical and nice to drive.
6. Volvo XC90
Maybe you’re not quite ready to make the switch to a pure EV just yet, but still want a taste of zero-emission motoring. Well you could have a used plug-in hybrid Volvo XC90 for the same price as a Model Y and get the best of both worlds.
You can drive around town in electric-only mode, with the peace of mind of a petrol engine to back you up on long trips. The interior may not be very exciting to look at, but the XC90 is well-built and super-comfy. Our £47,000 budget will get you behind the wheel of a 2022 plug-in hybrid XC90 in sport-looking R Design trim.
7. Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport is one of the most desirable SUVs money can buy, and you can pick up a 2020 model for well under £50,000 these days. It looks great, offers great performance and it’s a comfortable motorway cruiser as well.
Land Rover doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability, so the Sport may not be as dependable as some alternatives, but you may be willing to look past this for something which is so effortlessly cool.
8. Jaguar I-Pace
Electric cars don’t have to be dull to drive, as proven by the Jaguar I-Pace. It’s great to chuck down a country road, but it’s also comfortable for motorway cruising. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time as well.
The range isn’t as impressive as the Model Y’s, and it’s not as spacious either. But if driving pleasure is important to you, the I-Pace is a no-brainer. Used prices are looking very tempting as well, with nearly-new examples fetching between £45,000 and £50,000.
9. Audi SQ7
Sometimes you just can’t beat an old-school diesel-powered SUV, and the Audi SQ7 is one of the best. It has a thumping 4.0-litre V8 engine under the bonnet with buckets of power and it’s not silly on fuel either.
It also has a much nicer, more plush-feeling cabin than a Tesla Model Y, and it’s roomier inside as well. A 2020 diesel SQ7 could be yours for the same price as a Model Y, you just may have to hunt around to find one with all the desirable options fitted because they were quite expensive.
10. Tesla Model X
For maximum theatre, you can’t really beat the Tesla Model X’s “falcon wing” rear doors. The way they electrically rise up in car parks is bound to turn heads, and the blistering performance. Cars from 2020 are going for around £40,000 these days, so well within our budget.
It’s quite firm over bumps, and the interior quality is a little disappointing for a car which was this expensive when new. However this is easy to gloss over thanks to the cavernous interior and clever tech on board.
