Drag race: Audi RS4 Competition vs BMW M3 Touring vs Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate

Mat’s made a beeline for the Audi RS4 Performance today, but what changes has Audi made to this over the standard car? Well it doesn’t have any more power, with 450hp and 600Nm from a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6. The eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox has been tuned slightly though, making the shift times a bit quicker and the launch more aggressive. The RS4 tips the scales at 1,745kg, and it’ll make a £84,600 hole in your wallet.

Lining up next to the Audi, we have the BMW M3 Touring. This is the first time BMW has made a practical estate version of its compact performance saloon, and it’s certainly packing a punch. Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six putting out 510hp and 650Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s slightly heavier than the Audi at 1,865kg. It’s also slightly more expensive at £86,570.

Finally we have the only car here sporting a V8 engine, and of course it comes from Mercedes-AMG. The C63 S has a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, putting out the same 510hp as the BMW but slightly more torque at 700Nm. Unlike the other two cars, the C63 sends all of its power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,800kg. As for price, despite the extra two cylinders it’s actually the least expensive at £78,000.
