Drag race: Porsche 911 Turbo S vs Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

The new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is a seriously impressive bit of kit, with over 1,000hp from its dual motors and a Nurburgring record for production electric cars.

But is it a match for the mighty 911 Turbo S? Well we’re going to find out by having a good old-fashioned Carwow drag race, and we’ve thrown in a tuned 911 Turbo S just for good measure.

New Porsche Taycan Turbo GT

Powering the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is a pair of electric motors, one on each axle, putting out a combined 1,043hp and 1,240Nm of torque. It also has a setup on the rear axle with a two-speed gearbox, something which is meant to help with power delivery.

As you may expect from an EV, this is not a light car. It tips the scales at 2,365kg, and this ballistic electric missile costs £186,300.

Porsche 911 Turbo S

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a car we’ve drag raced a lot at Carwow, because it’s got one of the best launch control systems on the market. Powering it is a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with 650hp and 800Nm of torque.

This is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and the 911 is a lot lighter than the Taycan at 1,640kg. The price is around the same though, a Turbo S will set you back £180,000.

Tuned Porsche 911 Turbo S

The 911 is rapid, but it’s a bit down on power compared to the Taycan. We’ve therefore brought along a tuned Turbo S as well to level the playing field. This car still has the standard gearbox, but it’s been heavily modified.

It’s putting out 1,100hp and 1,085Nm of torque, and it weighs the same 1,640kg. With all the upgrades, this 911 cost its owner £239,000.
